WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) propelled the University of New Haven Chargers women's volleyball team to victory with the match winning kill in the fifth set on Thursday night. The game came down to the wire as the Chargers and Bears went the full five sets in a 3-2 victory for the Blue and Gold.
New Haven took the first set to start the game, 25-20. The Bears retaliated and won the second and third sets (25-19, 25-14). Down 2-1, New Haven won the fourth set, 26-24, to force the fifth set. The Chargers completed the come back with a 15-10 fifth set victory to win the match.
Martins led the team with 20 kills on the night. Behind her was senior
Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) who had 12 kills and freshman
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) with 11 kills.
On the offensive side, senior
Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) guided the team with 35 assists on the night. Freshman
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) added 11 assists and junior Lindsay Kim had two assists. The Chargers had a combined seven service aces on the night. Chan led the team with three aces. Martins captured two aces, and Greathead and Kim each contributed one service ace.
Kim led the team defensively with 19 digs. Chan had 16 digs followed by Martins' 13 digs on the night. Bussey had four blocks while Greathead and senior
Fernanda da Silva (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Berlaar Sao Pascoal) each added three blocks to contribute to the victory.
The Chargers extend their win streak to six games and improve to 10-7, 5-0 NE-10. Up next for the Chargers is a trip to Saint Rose on Saturday October 7
th for another Northeast-10 Conference matchup. Opening serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
