Russo Has Two Hits As Baseball Falls to Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) had two hits and two RBI, but a late rally by the University of New Haven baseball team came up short as the Chargers fell to the Adelphi Panthers 8-5 on Monday afternoon. The Blue and Gold is now 4-1 on the season.

The Chargers fell behind in the bottom of the first inning as two errors led to three Adelphi runs. The Panthers added four more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead before New Haven started to chip away. In the top of the fifth, Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) doubled with one out. Two batters later, Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) came up with an infield single followed by Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) reaching on an error to load the bases. Russo singled to left, scoring Garcia and Chamberlain to make it 7-2.

New Haven scratched closer in the sixth when an RBI groundout from Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) scored Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) who had reached on a throwing error by the catcher. The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the seventh before the Chargers scored the final runs of the game an inning later.  With Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) on second and Perrelli on first, a groundout by Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) moved the runners up to second and third before Billy Huber (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) hit a ground ball to second that was mishandled by the fielder allowing both runners to score.

On the mound, Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) pitched well for New Haven, allowing one run on one hit in 3.1 innings of work.

The Chargers are back in action on Sunday when they take on Felician at Frank Vieira Field in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
