WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team scored 20 runs combined between the two games of a doubleheader and got a pair of quality starts as the Chargers swept a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division twinbill from the Adelphi Panthers, winning game one 9-1 before claiming the second contest 11-0 on Sunday.
The Chargers scored in every inning of game one except for the second and the seventh, building an 8-0 lead before eventually picking up the 9-1 win. David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) threw a career best eight innings in earning his third win of the season. He did not walk a batter and struck out eight.
In the second game, New Haven jumped on top early with three first inning runs. The Chargers added to the lead with two runs each in the fourth and fifth before tallying four in the seventh. On the mound, Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) delivered six shutout innings, striking out eight.
Seven New Haven players recorded three hits or more on the day led by Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) who reached base eight times with five hits and three walks. Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) and Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) each had four hits with Petrillo driving in four runs. Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford), Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd), Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) and Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) each recorded three hits.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Blue and Gold fired the opening salvo in the bottom of the first when Petrillo doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Perrelli single.
- In the third, the Chargers took the lead for good when Walraven doubled to lead off the inning and came in to score when a sacrifice by Russo led to a throwing error by the Panthers first baseman. Russo scored two batters later on a Perrelli single.
- New Haven padded its lead with two each in the fourth and sixth and single runs in the fifth and eighth.
- Seven members of the Chargers starting lineup recorded a hit with Walraven, Petrillo, Perrelli and Caico delivering a pair each.
- Petrillo, Perrelli and Chamberlain each drove in two runs.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- New Haven jumped out early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Walraven and Russo singled, followed by a walk to Petrillo. Perrelli singled back through the middle to plate Walraven and make it 1-0. Zagaja came up with a single to right, scoring two more runs to push the lead to 3-0.
- In the fourth, Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) singled with one out and stole second. Walraven stood in next and smacked his second homer of the season over the leftfield wall to extend the lead to 5-0.
- The Blue and Gold pushed the lead further when with Zagaja on second, Caico crushed a monster homerun beyond the retaining wall in rightfield to make it 7-0.
- New Haven put the game away in the seventh, scoring four times, keyed by a two-run Petrillo single.
- Kennedy pitched six scoreless innings. The quintet of Connor Moriarty (Branford, Conn./Branford), Colin Keyes (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), Will Aldam (Danbury, Conn./Berkshire School), Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and Alex Hyman finished off the shutout.
