Baseball Comes From Behind to Topple Dominican

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team scored two runs in the seventh inning as the Chargers came from behind to down the Dominican Chargers 4-3 in a non-conference game on Thursday afternoon.

New Haven played from behind for the majority of the game as Dominican scored single runs in the first two innings. The Blue and Gold tallied a run each in the second and fifth to tie the game, but the visitors plated a run in the sixth to go back up 3-2. New Haven took the lead for good in the seventh as an RBI single from Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) and a sac fly by Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) drove in a run each to put the Blue and Gold up 4-3.

Petrillo, Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) each had two hits for the Chargers. PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) scored two runs. Kellen Croce (Middlebury, Conn./Gunnery School / Maine) picked up the win in relief with Caico recording his first save.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Dominican opened up the scoring with single runs in each of the first two innings. New Haven got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second as Caico doubled to open the frame and advanced to third on a wild pitch. James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) walked two batters later to put runners on the corners. With Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) at the plate and an 0-1 count, Myers broke for second. When the throw went through to try to catch Myers, Caico sprinted home with the first run of the game for the Blue and Gold.
  • After a scoreless third and fourth, New Haven drew even in the fifth as PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) doubled after an 11-pitch at-bat to open the inning. He advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt and came in to score on a Petrillo groundout.
  • Dominican wasted no time in getting the run back and taking the lead as a misjudged ball in centerfield allowed Jayson Gray to triple home Joshua Colon who singled with one out.
  • The Blue and Gold took its first lead of the day in the seventh as Myers and Contreras walked to lead off the inning and moved up a base each on a Walraven sacrifice. After Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Petrillo singled to left, plating Myers and tying the game. Perrelli followed with a sac fly, bringing home Contreras to put New Haven up 4-3.

NOTEABLE

  • With his two hits, Garcia extended his hitting streak to seven games.
  • Caico pitched a scoreless ninth for his first career save.
  • Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) pitched a scoreless fifth, striking out the side. He now has 12 punchouts in just 7.2 innings of work.
