Petrillo Records Six Hits in Twinbill as Chargers Sweep Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. – Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) had six hits combined through both games of a doubleheader as the University of New Haven baseball team swept a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division twinbill from the Saint Rose Golden Knights winning by scores of 5-4 and 11-7 on Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, both teams scored in the first, before New Haven took a 3-1 lead with single runs in the third and fourth. The Golden Knights drew even with a pair of runs in the sixth, but the Chargers battled back with one in the seventh and one in the ninth on a Petrillo homer. The insurance run proved to be critical as Saint Rose scored once in the bottom of the frame and had the bases loaded before Josh Walker (Otisville, N.Y./Minisink Valley) closed the door for his first save. David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) went the first seven innings, striking out a career-best nine batters.

In the second game, the offense was plentiful early as the Blue and Gold took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first only to see the Golden Knights score four times in the bottom of the inning. New Haven took the lead back with three in the second before both pitching staffs settled in, not allowing another run until Saint Rose tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth. The Chargers battled back in the seventh, scoring five runs, highlighted by a Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) two-run triple.

For the day, in addition to Petrillo's six hits, Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) had five with Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush), Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) and Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) each recording four. Caico, Zagaja and Perrelli had three RBI apiece.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Chargers scored throughout the game, plating single runs in five different innings.
  • In the first, Chamberlain was hit by a pitch before back-to-back singles from Petrillo and Perrelli plated him with the first run of the game.
  • Tied 1-1 in the third, Petrillo singled, moved up on a fly out and stole third before Caico came through with a sacrifice fly, giving New Haven a 2-1 lead. Another run came across in the fourth when Chamberlain walked and scored on a single by Perrelli and an error by the leftfielder.
  • Saint Rose tied the game in the sixth on a two-run homer by Joe DeLuca.
  • Petrillo was in the mix again in the seventh as he scored an unearned run singling to lead off the inning, moving to second on a Zagaja single and scoring on an error by the first baseman.
  • New Haven capped its scoring in the top of the ninth when Petrillo went deep for the first time this season, extending the lead to 5-3.
  • The Chargers allowed one run in the ninth, but Walker was able to work out of a bases loaded jam for his first save of the year.
  • Palmer notched his fifth win of the season allowing three runs on five hits, striking out a career-high nine batters.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • New Haven scored twice in the first as Walraven and Chamberlain singled to lead off the inning and were on second and third when a wild pitch brought home Walraven. Two batters later, a Zagaja single scored Chamberlain to make it 2-0.
  • Saint Rose scored four times in the first to take a 4-2 lead before the Chargers tallied three more in the second as PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) tripled to open the stanza. Walraven singled him home and was followed by a Chamberlain single and a Petrillo walk to load the bases. Zagaja walked two batters later to force in the tying run and a fielder's choice from Caico pushed Chamberlain across the plate, putting the Blue and Gold on top 5-4.
  • The Golden Knights tied the game in the fifth with an unearned run.
  • New Haven put up another crooked number in the seventh. Chamberlain singled with one out and moved to third on a Petrillo double. Perrelli tripled home both runners and then scored himself on a single by Zagaja. Caico followed with a triple to right and came home on an Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) sac fly as the Blue and Gold took a 10-5 lead.
  • Undaunted, Saint Rose clawed closer as DeLuca hit a two-run homer in the seventh.
  • The Chargers added a run of their own in the eighth as a Chamberlain single scored Contreras who singled to lead off the inning.
  • Walraven, Chamberlain and Caico each had four hits in the second game, part of a 19-hit barrage for the Blue and Gold.

NOTABLE

  • The 19 hits in the second game are a season-high for New Haven and the most for the team since totaling 19 against Merrimack on April 10, 2016.
  • The four hits by Petrillo in the opener was the second time this season he has accomplished the feat. He also did it on Feb. 24 against Mercy.
  • With their quartet of hits in game two, both Caico and Chamberlain recorded a career-high.
