PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore outside hitter Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) drilled a season-high 17 kills to lead the University of New Haven volleyball team (21-4, 10-1 NE10) to a three-set sweep of the Pace Setters in a key Northeast-10 and regional match-up on Tuesday night.
Greathead's 17 kills came on a team-best .469 attack percentage, while it is her 11th match of the season, and fourth in the last five matches, in double figures. Overall, she was one of two players in double figures as freshman outside hitter Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) finished out the night with 10 kills coming on a .250 hitting average.
Senior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) led her squad to a .237 team hitting average, finishing the night with 32 assists, while also adding four kills to her efforts. The Chargers best hitting of the night came in the second set where they combined for 15 kills on a .294 average.
Defensively, New Haven was led by senior libero Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) and sophomore setter Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) who each finished with 11 digs, leading eight different players who made at least one defensive stop. Rounding out the leaders on defense were Rios and Greathead who each finished with nine digs, both finishing one shy of a double double on the night.
As a team, New Haven combined for nine total blocks against the Setters with junior Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) and freshman Jalynn Finnie (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) each leading the way with five total blocks. Finishing just behind them was sophomore Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) who combined for four total blocks, including the lone solo return of the night.
The Chargers continue their three-game road swing with a trip to Manchester, N.H. on Saturday afternoon to take on the Southern New Hampshire Penmen.
