GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven volleyball team had its 10-match win streak snapped on Tuesday night, falling on the road to the Adelphi Panthers in straight sets. Leading New Haven (17-4, 7-1 NE10) on the night was sophomore outside hitter Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) who was the only Charger to finish in double figures with 15 kills.
Greathead's 15 kills came on 44 total attacks as she closed out the match hitting .250. Joining her in leading the offense was reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) who finished just shy of her third straight double digit game with nine kills coming on a .259 average. Overall, six different players contributed on offense with junior Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) and senior Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) completing the leaders with six and five kills, respectively.
Setting up New Haven's offense throughout the night was the senior setter Rios who, in a two-setter rotation, led the way with 27 assists as sophomore Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) completed the duo with seven helpers. Combined, the Chargers finished the match with a .175 hitting average, with their top hitting set coming in the opening stanza where she combined for 11 kills and just three errors in 34 attempts (.235).
Defensively, a trio of Chargers finished in double figures with senior libero Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) leading the way with 22 digs, her second 20-plus defensive performance of the season. Rounding out the leaders was Rios who completed a double double with 12 digs and Fera who finished with 10.
The Chargers will look to return to the win column on Saturday when they continue a three-match road stretch in Easton, Mass. taking on the Stonehill Skyhawks. First serve in the NE10 battle is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
