WEST HAVEN, Conn. – For the seventh time this season, the New Haven volleyball team (24-4, 12-1 NE10) posted a plus-.300 hitting percentage as a team in a three-set sweep of the Saint Michael's Purple Knights (25-13, 25-12, 25-9). Leading the Chargers on the night was sophomore Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) who was the only player in the match to finish in double figures with a dozen kills.
Overall for the night, the Chargers combined for 41 kills and just eight miscues in 103 attempts for a .320 average. The best hitting in the match came in the opening set when 15 kills came on 32 attempts with a pair of errors, all leading to a .406 attack percentage. The Chargers also combined for 15 kills in the final set, while defensively, the held the Purple Knights to a .034 hitting average with 19 kills and 16 errors.
Setting up the New Haven offense throughout the match was senior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) who closed out the match with 29 assists while adding four kills, four aces and eight digs. Her four kills also came on an impressive .800 attack average as she took just five attempts in the match without hitting an error.
In addition to Greathead's 12 kills, sophomore Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) and junior Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) joined in leading the offense with nine and eight kills, respectively. The nine kills for Garden came with one error on 17 attempts for a. 471 average, while Nowicki finished errorless in 11 attempts for a career-high .727 hitting percentage. Additionally, New Haven drilled a season-high 13 service aces led by Rios' four, while Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) and Sydney Strasner (Corona, Calif./Santiago) each put down three unreturned serves.
Defensively, the Chargers were led by Chan who compiled 10 digs, the only New Haven player in double figures. Joining her in leading the team was senior libero Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) with nine and Rios' eight digs. As a team, the Chargers also combined for nine total blocks with Garden leading the Blue and Gold with seven total, including two solo blocks.
The Chargers will close out their regular season schedule on Saturday, November 3 when they host the Saint Anselm Hawks, looking to secure the top-seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship. First serve in the NE10 battle is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., while prior to the match, the Chargers will honor their three seniors; Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook), Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) and Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef).
