WEST HAVEN, Conn. – With a five-set (20-25, 25-15, 21-25,25-19,15-13) thriller over the Saint Anselm Hawks in the final match of the regular season, the University of New Haven women's volleyball team secured its ninth NE10 Regular Season Championship on Saturday night at Charger Gymnasium.
Leading the Blue and Gold on the night was sophomore outside hitter Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) who finished with 14 kills, one of three players in double figures. The middle blocker also added four blocks, while as a team, New Haven finished with nine total in the match. Joining Garden in leading the Chargers was classmate Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) with 13 kills and freshman Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) who finished with a dozen. In addition to the three in double figures, senior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) finished with a team-best hitting average of .412 on a combined eight kills with a single error in 17 attempts. Also hitting well was freshman Jalynn Finnie (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) who finished with seven kills and one error in 16 attempts for a .375 average.
As the primary setter for the Chargers, Rios led New Haven to an overall hitting percentage of .253 with 42 assists. The best team hitting of the night came in the second set where a 16-kill effort came on 30 attempts with three errors for a .433 average.
Defensively, New Haven finished with four players registering double figures, led by senior libero Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) who closed out the night with 13 digs. Rios also added double figures, combining her 42 assists with 12 digs for a double doubles. Also completing a double double was Greathead who finished with 11 digs, while senior Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) contributed 10. Finnie led New Haven with five total blocks, while junior Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) matched Garden with four.
The Chargers will begin their quest for a third-straight and seventh overall NE10 Championship on Tuesday when they welcome the Saint Anselm Hawks back to West Haven for a quarterfinal match-up.
