WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)), junior
Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and sophomore
Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) each launched extra-base hits that combined for four RBI in the fifth inning to lift the No. 14 University of New Haven baseball team past the Dominican College Chargers, 6-5, in a very cold afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.
Chamberlain and Caico batted in two runs each on the day, and freshman
Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) tallied one RBI as well. Graduate student
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) tallied two hits and five other Chargers finished with one.
Senior
Will Aldam (Danbury, Conn./Berkshire School) earned the win on the mound, pitching 3.1 innings in relief to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. Aldam tallied four strikeouts on the day and only allowed three hits. Sophomore
Devon DiMascio (Mansfield, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) got the start for the Blue and Gold, working through 3.2 innings with five strikeouts while giving up three earned runs. Senior
Kellen Croce (Cheshire, Conn./Gunnery School) closed out the game with his third save of the season, striking out two.
Dominican scored in the top of the first inning and was able to hold on to the lead for two innings before Chamberlain leveled the score, 1-1, when Caico was hit by a pitch. Despite the cold, Dominican heated up in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on three hits while taking advantage of two Charger errors to grab a 4-1 advantage.
New Haven chipped back in the fourth, scoring on a wild pitch, but did the rest of the damage in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs on three hits to earn the lead and sustain it for the remainder of the game. With a new pitcher on the mound for Dominican, graduate student
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) drew a lead-off walk before Caico blasted a triple to left center field, plating Zagaja from first. Up next, Garcia hit a deep double that fell just inside of the left field line to easily score Caico to tie the game up at four, before Chamberlain blasted the go-ahead two-RBI triple to right center field, as junior
PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Garcia scored to take a 6-4 lead.
Dominican added one more run in the top of the eighth inning when
Will Dawson scored on a ground out, but the comeback was too late as Croce finished out the game with a pair of strike outs and a ground out as New Haven escaped with the 6-5 victory.
Pending the potential nor'easter headed for our area, New Haven is scheduled to open up NE10 action on Saturday, March 24 with a doubleheader against Assumption at Frank Vieira Field. The Chargers will then continue its home stand a day later in another cross-divisional doubleheader against the Merrimack Warriors. Prior to Saturday's doubleheader, New Haven will honor the 2017 NE10 Championship team with a ring ceremony, scheduled to take place at approximately 11:45 am. Family, friends, and alumni of the baseball program are welcome to attend.
