WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 7 University of New Haven baseball team (24-7, 9-7 NE10) completed its three-game series with the No. 17 Le Moyne Dolphins (24-8-1, 10-2-1 NE10) on Sunday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field, dropping both ends of a doubleheader under cold and windy conditions.
Game 1: Le Moyne 7, New Haven 0
The Dolphins got all the offense it would need early on, scattering three hits in the bottom of the second stanza to open the game up, 3-0. Senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) posted his second hit of the game, a two-out single to right field to advance Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) into scoring position, however the Chargers were unable to produce any results, ending the inning on a fly-out to first base.
Le Moyne added an additional run in the bottom of the seventh and three more an inning later to open the lead up to seven runs, before junior Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) roped a double down the left field line in the Chargers last at bat. The Dolphins lead was too large to overcome though, as New Haven was retired in order to close out game one.
Sophomore Devon DiMascio (Mansfield, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, pitching 2.0 innings while surrendering three earned runs. Senior Will Aldam (Danbury, Conn./Berkshire School) pitched four solid innings in relief, allowing one hit against his 14 batters, striking out four without giving up a run.
Game 2: Le Moyne 3, New Haven 0 (7 inn.)
The dominant Le Moyne pitching carried in to game two, as Dolphins right-handed pitcher Ryan Murphy silenced New Haven's offense, tossing a no-hitter in a scheduled seven-inning game. New Haven was able to put two runners on base with a hit by pitch and an error, but the Le Moyne defense stepped up behind their pitcher and made tough defensive plays to preserve the no-hitter when needed. Le Moyne took the lead in the first inning, plating two unearned runs in their first at bat before adding a third run in the fourth inning.
Freshman Izaiya Mestre (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) tossed the complete-game for the Blue and Gold (6.0 IP), allowing one earned run while striking out four.
