No. 16 Baseball Blanks Mercy, 7-0, for Second-Straight Shutout

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The No. 16 University of New Haven baseball team (28-6) recorded its second-straight shutout and eighth overall, sailing past the Mercy Mavericks (19-22) in non-conference action at Mercy Field on Saturday.

Earning the win on the mound was senior Will Aldam (Danbury, Conn./Berkshire School) (3-1) who got his second start of the season, working through 6.0 innings while surrendering only one hit and striking out four.

Six Chargers finished with one hit each, as freshman George Pappas (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) led the way with two RBI in the first inning to help New Haven pull away early. Sophomore Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford), graduate student Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush), senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)), freshman Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), and junior Dylon Grzenda (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) each had a hit, while Chamberlain, Walraven, Caico and junior James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) all had one RBI each. As a team, the Chargers were patient at the plate all day, drawing nine walks against the Maverick pitching staff.

New Haven scored all seven runs in two separate innings, getting off to a hot start in the top of the first with four runs on three hits. After Chamberlain and Walraven drew walks, Caico singled home Chamberlain before Pappas opened things up with a two-RBI single through the left side, scoring junior Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and Walraven.

Aldam held things down on the mound, as he did not allow a hit through his first four innings of work, before a single to center field put the Mavericks in the hit column. Aldam proceeded to retire his next three batters in order, and closed out his day with another hitless inning in the bottom of the sixth.

Pappas led off the top of the inning with a 14-pitch at bat, fouling off eight-straight before seeing ball four to force a Maverick pitching change. The Chargers saw the pitching change as no threat, as Caico followed up with a double down the left field line, moving Pappas to third. Chamberlain scored Pappas on a sacrifice fly, before the Chargers put the game out of reach, scoring two runs on a Walraven single and an error on the pitcher.

Due to rain in the greater New Haven area, tomorrow's game against Southern Connecticut State was re-scheduled to Thursday, where the Chargers will square off in the final Elm City Battle of the season. First pitch at Frank Vieira Field is slated for 3:30 pm.
