No. 15 Baseball Outlasts Southern Connecticut, 3-2, Completes Season-Sweep of Owls

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Graduate student Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) blasted two RBI to lead the No. 15 University of Baseball team (29-6, 11-6 NE10) to a season sweep over the Southern Connecticut Owls (17-20, 4-11 NE10), 3-2, on Thursday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.

Zagaja was one of two Chargers who finished with a pair of hits on the day, as both Zagaja and freshman Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) went 2-for-4 at the dish. Graduate Student Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) finished with one hit on the afternoon, an RBI double to left field to open up scoring in the fourth. Junior Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) each tacked on one hit in the victory.

David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) (7-1) got the win on the mound as he worked through 7.0 innings, striking out five Owls while surrendering one earned run. Freshman Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) entered the game in the ninth, closing out the game with his fourth save of the season.

After Palmer retired the side in order in three-straight innings, Chargers got the bats going in the bottom of the fourth, jumping out to a 2-0 lead behind three doubles in the frame by Huber, Walraven, and Zagaja. Southern Connecticut cut the deficit in half, scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth, before Zagaja answered in the bottom half of the stanza as he knocked an RBI single to right field to send Huber home.

Southern Connecticut produced an additional run in the top of the eighth with an RBI double, but never caught up as the Charger defense shut down the Owls the remainder of the way.

Baseball will next complete its second to last three-game series of the season, as the Chargers will welcome the Saint Rose Golden Knights to West Haven on Saturday and Sunday April 28 and 29. Prior to Saturday's doubleheader that is slated to start at 12:00 pm, the Chargers will honor the nine New Haven seniors prior to first pitch. New Haven will then close out the series on Sunday with first pitch at Vieira Field slated for 1:00 pm.
