Zagaja Goes Yard; No. 15 Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep of Saint Rose, 5-3

WEST HAVEN, Conn. -  The No. 15 University of New Haven baseball team (32-6, 14-6 NE10) concluded the regular season home schedule on Sunday, completing the three-game series sweep over the Saint Rose Golden Knights (15-20, 8-12 NE10), 5-3 at Vieira Field.

Graduate student Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) completed his second-straight game with at least three RBI, driving in three runs off a pair of hits, including a two-run home run to left center field in the first inning. Also adding one RBI each was sophomore Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) and senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)), who each drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Devon DiMascio (Mansfield, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) got the start on the mound and allowed only two hits over 5.1 innings of work, before senior Colin Keyes (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) closed out the sixth inning, earning the win with 0.2 innings pitched. Senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) closed out the game in the ninth, earning his first save of the season.

New Haven got on the scoreboard in the first inning for its third straight game, as Chamberlain and sophomore Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) got on base before Chamberlain scored on Caico's sacrifice fly to center field. In the next at bat for the Chargers, Zagaja blasted his second home run of the season over the left field wall, with New Haven taking an early 3-0 lead.

On the hill, DiMascio pitched a hitless four innings against the Golden Knights, before Saint Rose broke through in the top of the fifth with two runs. The Golden Knights tied the game at three in the top of the sixth, before New Haven answered in their next at bats, as Caico doubled to right field and Zagaja singled him home to take the final lead of the game.

The Blue and Gold added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh with a Chamberlain sacrifice fly to center field, sending home junior Dylon Grzenda (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) for a two-run advantage. Saint Rose left two runners on base in the top of the eighth, before Caico closed out the game, striking out two of his three batters to shut down the Golden Knights.

The Chargers will return to the diamond on Tuesday, May 1st and will complete the three-game series with Pace University at Peter X. Finnerty Field in Pleasantville, N.Y. First pitch against the Setters is slated for 3:30 pm.
