Walraven Collects 200th Career Hit in Baseball’s NCAA Regional Setback versus SNHU

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Graduate student Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) collected his 200th career hit on Friday, but the top-seeded University of New Haven baseball team fell short against the No. 4 seeded Southern New Hampshire Penmen, 7-1 at Finnerty Field in the 2018 Division II East Region Baseball Championship.

Walraven finished his day going 2-for-4 at the plate, the lone Charger with a pair of hits. Senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) drove in New Haven's run with an RBI single in the first inning to plate sophomore Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford), who was one of five Chargers to get a base hit. Graduate student Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic), junior PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and sophomore Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) all had the other hits for New Haven. Senior David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) suffered the loss on the mound, throwing 5.0 innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs, striking out three.

For Southern New Hampshire, Dakota Mulcay and Idelson Tavares each had a pair of RBI, with four Penmen scattering two hits each. Among the four were Mulcay, Thomas Buonopane, Caleb Potter, and Sam Henrie.  Mitchell Powers went the distance on the mound, tossing all nine innings with six strikeouts and one earned run.

Southern New Hampshire scored on an error in the top of the first, before New Haven quickly answered to knot up the score after one as Caico ripped a single to left field to send home Chamberlain. The Penmen added two runs in the top of the third and three runs three innings later to gain a five-run advantage, before adding a final run in the top of the eighth.

With the setback, the Chargers fall to the loser's bracket, and will face the No. 7 seeded Wilmington Wildcats in an elimination game that is scheduled for 11:00 am at Peter X. Finnerty Field.
