Pitching Combines for Shutout to Down Wilmington in NCAA Action, 1-0

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Graduate student third baseman Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) chopped an RBI single to the pitcher in the fifth inning and the pitching held the Wildcat offense scoreless, as the No. 1 seeded University of New Haven Chargers baseball team escaped with a 1-0 win over the No. 7 seeded Wilmington Wildcats in an elimination game on Saturday at Finnerty Field.

Sophomore left fielder Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), junior Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and junior PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) each had a pair of hits for the Chargers, with Garcia doubling to right field in the top of the second and Contreras lacing a triple to right center in the ninth. Senior righty Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) (9-1) earned the win on the mound, tossing 5.0 innings with five strikeouts, surrendering four hits and no earned runs. Senior lefty Kellen Croce (Cheshire, Conn./Gunnery School) earned his ninth save of the season, as the Charger pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts against the Wildcats.

The first four innings were nearly silent for each team, but New Haven finally broke through in the fifth inning, as Huber scored on a Zagaja chopper to the pitcher that was mishandled for the first run of the game. The run proved to be the only one that New Haven would need for the remainder of the game, as Wilmington was only able to put together three total hits in the last four innings as New Haven advanced to the winners bracket.

With the win, New Haven survives another day and will play in another elimination game and will face the winner of No. 3 Le Moyne and No. 5 Franklin Pierce. Wilmington has been eliminated from the NCAA Division II East Region tournament.
