No. 7 Baseball Drops Regular Season Finale at Adelphi, Earns No. 2 Seed in NE10 Tournament

BOX SCORE GARDEN CITY, N.Y – The No. 7 University of New Haven baseball team (34-8, 16-8 NE10) closed out the 2018 regular season on Sunday, falling to the Adelphi Panthers (26-17-1, 14-9) at Bonomo Field, 2-1.

New Haven scattered six hits on the day, with junior PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) leading at the plate, going 2-for-3 with the lone RBI for the Chargers. Sophomore Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford), senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)), graduate student Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) and junior James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) each had one hit for New Haven, with Caico scoring the one run in the contest.

Sophomore Devon DiMascio (Mansfield, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) got the start on the mound, pitching 5.0 solid innings with two strikeouts. Senior Will Adlam (3-2) suffered the loss, pitching 3.0 innings with one earned run, striking out three.

It was a pitcher's duel over the first five innings of action, as there were only six combined hits during the span. New Haven was able to advance runners to third base on two occasions, however was unable to push any runs across before Adelphi got to it first, plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits.

The Chargers cut the deficit in half just one-half inning later, as Contreras drove a two-out single to left field to score Caico who had led off the inning with a walk on a 3-2 pitch. The Chargers left the bases loaded that inning and were hitless the remainder of the way as Adelphi held on for the 2-1 win.

Despite the loss, New Haven has clinched a home first round game in the NE10 Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will meet the No. 3 seeded Adelphi Panthers once again at Frank Vieira Field on Tuesday, May 8 at 3:00 pm. The winner of that contest will face the winner of No. 4 Bentley and No. 1 Southern New Hampshire.
