Bailey Nets First NE10 Player of the Week Accolades for Men’s Basketball

FULL NE10 RELEASE

MANSFIELD, Mass. –
University of New Haven men's basketball junior guard Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) scored his first NE10 weekly distinction with the Blue and Gold, garnering Player of the Week accolades after averaging 23.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and shooting 55.3 percent from the field in three games. The Player of the Week honor for Bailey follows a trio of NE10 Honor Roll selections earlier in the season, while the current honor encompasses the final game in 2018 and the first two games of 2019.

The Freeport, N.Y. native added to his collection of 20+ games with 25 points each against Bloomfield and in the upset of No. 17/18 Saint Thomas Aquinas, while sandwiched between those performances was a 21 point effort at Dominican. Overall, Bailey has scored 20+ in six games, including four surpassing the 25+ plateau. He has also hit the 20 point level in each of the last four games.

Bailey closed out the 2018 portion of New Haven's schedule with a second-straight 25+ performance, hitting that number on a 50 percent (9-of-18) shooting effort against Bloomfield. Included were four three point field goals, while he also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds against the Bears.

In a road game at Dominican to open up the New Year, Bailey led the Chargers with 21 points, shooting 53.3 percent (8-of-15) for the afternoon and picked off three steals. He closed out this most recent stretch with his fourth 25+ performance against the nationally ranked Spartans, hitting at a 64.3 percent clip from the field. Included were a pair of three pointers, while he also went 5-of-6 at the free throw line.

Overall for the season, Bailey leads the Chargers averaging a career-high 18.4 points per game, while also leading the team with 26 three point field goals. He and the Chargers will return to the court on Wednesday night when they face a second straight nationally ranked opponent, the Saint Anselm Hawks on the road. Tip-off at Stoutenburgh Gym in Manchester, N.H. is slated for 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
