FIRST PITCH
The New Haven baseball team will take on Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday afternoon, concluding a four-game road trip. The Chargers topped the Owls 2-1 with a pair of late runs back on April 2 at Vieira Field.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN (11-15, 5-7 NE10, 2-4 SWD)
New Haven will look to break out of its second three-game skid of the season on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers have won five straight matchups over the Owls, which includes two matchups on the road last season.
Three members of the Chargers are batting over .300 on the season, led by Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) (.371), Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) (.313) and Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) (.309), followed by Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) (.298) and Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) (.297). Chamberlain's average has moved up to fourth in the NE10, while his 23 walks rank sixth in the conference. Chamberlain enters Tuesday riding a six-game hitting streak, having collected two hits in four of those games, including going 2-for-4 in all three games at AIC over the weekend.
Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) is riding a five-game hitting streak, which includes a pair of four hit games last week, during which he recorded a hit in nine consecutive plate appearances. Both Chamberlain and Giovanelli hit .438 (7-for-16) last week.
Reliever Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) has yet to allow a run this season over nine appearances, striking out 26 over 19.1 innings and limiting opponents to a .097 batting average. Brendon Malouf (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) holds a 0.68 ERA, while Izaiya Mestre (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) leads all starters with a 2.41 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 33.2 innings and a 3-1 record over six starts.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN CONN. STATE (14-21, 5-10 NE10, 3-5 SWD)
The Owls enter Tuesday one game ahead of New Haven in the Southwest Division standings, and had a successful weekend on the road by taking two out of three from Le Moyne.
Since the teams last met, infielder Tyler Criscuolo has returned from injury and currently holds a 14-game hitting streak, while having reached base safely in all 18 of his games this season. He leads the team in batting average (.414), is tied for the team lead with three homers and is tied for third with 24 RBI, despite having missed 17 games this season.
Outfielder Mac Finnegan leads the Owls with 28 RBI while batting .248, and Cam O'Toole holds a .439 on-base percentage. Catcher Mike DeMartino is hitting .299 in the season with a team-leading 14 doubles.
Brandon White holds a 3.64 ERA over seven starts this year while striking out 25 and walking 17 in 42.0 innings of work.
