THE FIRST LOOK
New Haven will take a hiatus from divisional play for a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend at Saint Anselm and Saint Michael's. The weekend will begin with a twinbill against the Hawks on Saturday who are coming off of a historic season that included a runner-up finish at the College World Series. The weekend will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday at Saint Michael's who will host Southern Connecticut on Saturday. The doubleheaders on both days are slated for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch in game one.

Looking to build on a 10-1 overall record against NE10 opponents, New Haven features a balanced mixture of youth and veteran players. Leading the Chargers into the weekend is senior third baseman Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) who sports a team-high .358 batting average. Overall, she has scattered 24 hits on 67 at bats and driven in 11 runs. Just behind her is freshman shortstop Mya Case (Syracuse, N.Y/West Genessee) who leads the team with 25 total hits and a team-best 10 extra base hits including eight doubles, a triple and a home run. She has also driven in a team-high 18 runs. In the circle, freshman Ava Fitzmaurice (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) has opened up her career in style, currently second in the NE10 with 11 wins (11-4 overall) in 20 appearances, including 12 starts. The rookie sports a 2.17 earned run average, allowing 30 earned runs (38 total) on 88 hits in 96.2 innings of work while she has struck out a team-high 45 batters. In her most recent outing, Fitzmaurice threw her first complete game shutout against the visiting Pace Setters, allowing just five hits against the Setters, while her defense stood tall with four double plays in the seven-inning game.

Coming off a historic season which included a runner-up finish at the 2018 NCAA Women's College World Series, the Hawks stand in third place in the Northeast Division with a 5-1 record in NE10 play, all in division, and a 17-7 mark overall. The Hawks are coming off of a midweek sweep of the Franklin Pierce Ravens scoring 15 runs across the two games. For the year, Saint Anselm is led by junior right fielder Shannon Colson who enters the weekend with a .377 batting average, scattering a team-high 29 hits across 77 at bats while driving in seven runs. Leading the Hawks with 18 RBI is junior shortstop Jordan O'Connor who is also second on the team with 24 hits, which includes a team-best eight doubles. The leader in the circle for Saint Anselm is junior Morgan Perry who enters the weekend with a 1.94 earned run average, allowing 23 earned runs (24 total) in 83 innings of work. Perry has started all 15 games she has appeared in and is currently second in the NE10 with 100 total strikeouts.

Saint Michael's enters the weekend on a four-game skid, looking to break that against Southern Connecticut on Saturday before hosting New Haven. The Purple Knights (2-14 overall on the season) are led by junior pitcher/utility Torie Rathwell who coming into the weekend with a .388 batting average, fourth highest in the NE10. Overall, she has collected 19 hits across 49 at bats with eight of her 19 hits going for extra bases, six doubles and a pair of home runs. She has also driven in a team-high six runs. Following her in leading the offense is seniors Aleksandra Apkarian and Fallon Tierney who are each sporting a .300 batting average. In the circle, Rathwell again leads the way, among a three-person staff, with a 4.79 earned run average. She has allowed 50 earned runs (68 total) on 112 hits and struck out 41 batters.

UP NEXT
Following the weekend of cross-divisional play, the Chargers will return to Southwest Division action on Tuesday when they travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on the Pace Setters. The Chargers and Setters will begin the day by completing their suspended game (3-3, T-9) from this past week before closing out the three-game series. First pitch in the suspended game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
