CARY, N.C. - Freshman
Bryan Pazulski (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) turned in another strong performance on the mound and seven different Chargers recorded hits to lift New Haven to an 8-2 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday evening at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. Sophomore shortstop
Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) went 2-for-4 with two walks, three RBI and a pair of runs, and freshman outfielder
Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) reached base four times via a hit, three walks and had three RBI and a run scored. Junior first baseman
Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and senior outfielder
Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) each reached base three time while scoring two runs.
The Charger pitching staff combined for nine strikeout while allowing six hits and one walk. Making his second career start, Pazulski improved to 2-0 on the year while allowing five hits and one earned run, striking out five over 6.0 innings of work.
Noah Eisel (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside),
Cam Guarino (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and
Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) locked down the final three innings without allowing a run.
New Haven (4-3, 0-0 NE10) struck early and often with three runs right out of the gate in the top of the first. Chamberlain walked leading off, swiped second and promptly scored on a single by Budzik.
Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) later scored Budzik and Wells with a two-run double to stake the Chargers to the early 3-0 advantage.
Cain and
Brett Reedy (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) singled to begin the second, advanced 90 feet on a fly ball by Chamberlain, then came home on a two-run knock by Budzik to push the edge to 5-0.
After the Spartans got two runs back by way of four hits and an error in the bottom of the second, neither team scored again until the sixth. That is when the Chargers scored an insurance run against the STAC bullpen, drawing three walks in the inning, including a bases loaded walk by Wells to plate Cain unearned, making it a 6-2 ballgame.
Wells helped put the game out of reach in the eighth, drilling a two-strike single up the middle to plate Budzik and Chamberlain to push the New Haven lead to six.
The Chargers have one game remaining on their weekend trip to North Carolina, which will take place on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. against Molloy.
Live stats will be available.
