Majak Makes Majur Improvements in Saturdays Loss to the Chargers

Dominican Starters: Jalen Burgess, Wahaad Johnson, Daniel Grant, Donnell Hill, Justin Copman

How it Happened
Saturday afternoon, the New Haven Chargers experienced their first non-conference loss. This 66-60 fall to the Dominican Chargers puts them absent of a win on their own court.

All 40 minutes of action the Blue and Gold never got ahead of their opponent. On three occasions they tied things up, but for the most part they trailed behind. In the second half just six minutes in, New Haven suffered their largest set-back of 17 points but turned it around to only fall by six when all said and done.

Senior center Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) came to New Haven from Saint Peter's University. Majak's defensive efforts below the rim blocked a high of four shots in the game at Le Moyne last week. He opened his season in the CSI Tip Off Tourney with a high of six points in the opener and seven rebounds when playing D'Youville. All three of those stats were surpassed or matched this evening. Majak finished the night with new highs in points and rebounds with eight and ten respectively and repeated his high of four blocks. All eight of his points were a result of four dunks.

New Haven took 26 shot attempts from three-point range but only connected on six. This was a major struggle considering there were 18 attempts in the first half alone and they trailed by nine going into the half. By cutting down on three-point attempts in the second half the Blue and Gold were able to convert these missed three's to 15 made field goals, which allowed them to score 34 points in the second half.

With less than three minutes remaining, a bucket from Thomas outside the arc decreased the Chargers deficit to two, 62-60. The final four points scored by Dominican were from free throws in the final 11 seconds. Thomas and Lane both sent their opponent to the stripe.

Inside the Box Score

  • New Haven featured three players in double-digit scoring: Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) (18), Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) (10), and Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) (10).
  • Nick Crocker (East Falmouth, M.A./Falmouth High School) started for the first time wearing a blue and gold jersey. Crocker grabbed two boards and hit one field goal in his 16 minutes on the hardwood.
  • Sean Braithwaite (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) had his first career start. In Saturday's game he shot 2-for-5 from field range and also had two rebounds.
  • Majak did not start in Saturday's game and still set personal highs. He increased his scoring high by two points (8) which was last set in the season-opener. He also upped his rebounding record by three (10) which was previously set in the second game of the season.
