The University of New Haven Chargers extended their winning record (48-46) over the Owls in Wednesday nights Elm City battle. Their 75-64 victory paved the way to their first NE10 win of the season.Â
How it HappenedÂ
New Haven never lost ahold of their lead after Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) hit a three-pointer in the opening four minutes of action at Moore Field House, on the campus of Southern Connecticut.Â
Isaiah Boissard of the Owls shortened the gap between Southern and New Haven 21-20, but Lane initiated a 15-0 run as the minutes til halftime neared. Featured in this offensive spark on the hardwood was an outside the arc basket from Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie), as well as efforts from Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech). The Lane-Thomas-Rowland dynamic trio combined for a total of 48 points throughout the night.Â
Lyron Bennett, one of Southern's four double-digit scorers ended the half with a three, but New Haven still took the lead heading into the locker room at halftime 38-25.Â
Center Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added three to New Haven's 13-point lead after the break with a free throw paired with a drunk from the help of Lane.Â
The Owls never got within single digits of the Blue and Gold in the second half. Southern's struggle to catch up was largely in part of forcing New Haven to the stripe. All of the Blue and Gold's points off free throws came in the second half, and New Haven did their job making 11-of-12.Â
With three minutes standing between New Haven and an in-city rival victory, they lead by 12, 67-55. After the three-minute mark, all of the Chargers points were a result of free throws, aside from Lane's layup in the paint.Â
