Albany, NY - The Chargers baseball team got productive swings from Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) (Smithtown, NY), Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) (Danville, VT/St. Johnsbury Academy), and Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) (Wolcott, CT/Gunnery) and two quality starts from pitchers Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) (Locust Valley, NY/Locus Valley) and Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, NY/Seaford) as the Blue and Gold split a pair with NE10 Southwest Division foe St. Rose this afternoon.
UNH won game one 6-3, while St. Rose salvaged the split with a 7-5 win in the second game. With Sunday's 12-9 win, the Chargers took two of three from the Golden Knights and improved their record to 4-4 with the three-game set now behind them.
Huber and Wells combined for four hits today, while Taylor drove in four runs in the twin bill.
Game 1 - New Haven 6, St. Rose 3
The Chargers (4-4, 4-2 NE10) used a pair of home runs to take the early lead en route to its game one win. Taylor hit a solo homer in the fourth inning to break open a scoreless game.
UNH added to its lead with a three-run fifth inning. Wells singled home Huber to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) then doubled the lead with a two-run home run and UNH led 4-0.
After St. Rose pulled within 4-1, Huber delivered a two-run double in the top of the seventh to give the Chargers their final two runs of the day.
Eletto was the beneficiary of the 10-hit attack. He threw five innings of four-hit baseball to get the win. He struck out six and walked only one. Bryan Pazulski (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) (Media, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) earned a save with his two inning relief stint.
Huber and Wells accounted for four of the Blue and Gold 10 hits in the game. Huber and Bianco each had two RBIs and six different players scored.
Game 2 - St. Rose 7, New Haven 5
The Chargers were poised for the sweep until the Golden Panthers exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in their 7-5 win.
UNH built up a 5-1 lead as Huber, Wells, Bianco, and Taylor had another solid day at the plate. All four had two hits apiece. Taylor ended the game with three RBIs.
Bianco doubled home Wells to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Taylor then ripped a double to left centerfield scoring Bianco and UNH led 2-1.
UNH would score three runs in their half of the sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Taylor found another gap and tripled scoring Chiaro and Bianco. Hunter Boag's (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) sacrifice fly brought home Taylor for a 5-1 Charger lead.
However, St. Rose plated six runs in their sixth-inning swings to erase the Blue and Gold lead in the Golden Panthers 7-5 win. All totaled, there were nine runs scored in the sixth inning alone.
Cain was stellar in his mound appearance. He allowed only one hit and one run in five innings on the bump.
