UNH Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Elm City Rivals; Winning Nightcap 11-4

West Haven, CT - In a day that saw the Elm City rivals combine to score 35 runs on 46 hits, New Haven and Southern Connecticut split a Northeast-10 Southwest Division doubleheader Friday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.

Southern took the opener pounding out 16 hits in their eventual 14-6 win. The Blue and Gold struck early in game two and won the nightcap by a 11-4 score.

Jack Reardon (Commack. N.Y./Commack) (Commack, NY/Commack) and Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) (Danville, VT/St. Johnsbury Academy) each contributed four hits between the two games. Wells added four RBIs from his cleanup spot in the order. On the bump, Brian Pazulski (Media, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) earned his first win of the season with a solid game two start.

Game 1 - Southern Connecticut 14, New Haven 6

After the Owls took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, New Haven responded with three of their own. Wells cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple and New Haven led 3-2. That lead would double when Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, NY/Seaford) singled home Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) (Amityville, NY/Copiague), who had doubled in the Chargers fourth inning. Cain would have three hits over the course of the doubleheader.

However, that was all for naught as SCSU would put up a crooked number in their sixth inning at bat. They plated six runs on five hits to take an 8-4 lead they would never relinquish.

The Owls would score six more runs in their final two swings to take a 14-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.

UNH would score two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Reardon singled and would eventually score on an Owl error. Brett Reedy (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) (Enfield, CT/Enfield) would then double home Reardon to account for the final Chargers run.

Game 2 - New Haven 11, Southern Connecticut 4

The Blue and Gold struck first in the second game. With a full-count and two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) (Wolcott, CT/The Gunnery) laced a single to center field with the bases loaded to score Wells and Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) for a 2-0 lead. Taylor went 2-for-2 with four RBIs and a run scored in the second game.

Dylan Chiaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) (Southington, CT/Southington) would come home in the next sequence when Southern Connecticut starting pitcher Brandon White uncorked a wild pitch to increase UNH's lead to 3-0. Chiaro would have a hit in each game and scored three runs.

The Owls inched back within a run at 3-2 with a pair of runs. Both came after two were out and no one on in the Owls second and third inning turns at the plate.

From there on out, New Haven took control scoring the next five runs to take an 8-2 lead through five innings of this seven-inning contest.

The Chargers scored two runs in the bottom of the third without a hit. They took advantage of a pair of walks, a wild pitch, an error by the Owls catcher, and a fielder's choice to make the score 5-2.

UNH then tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chiaro doubled home Wells. Then, Taylor doubled home Bianco and Chiaro and the Blue and Gold led 8-2.

After SCSU plated a run in the top of the fifth inning, UNH responded with their second three-run inning in a row. The big hit came off the bat of Wells, who delivered his fourth hit of the day to score Reardon. Two more Chargers scored on wild pitches and UNH led 11-3.

Pazulski was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst. He was very effective over four innings to earn his first win of the season. He scattered six hits, allowed two runs, but struck out four and only walked one.

Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, NY/Commack), Cam Guarino (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) (Falmouth, ME), and Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) each threw an effective inning to close out the game on the mound for the Chargers.
