Baseball Splits Twin Bill With SCSU On Senior Day; Won Opener 4-3 After Pre-Game Ceremony

West Haven - The New Haven baseball team honored its five graduating seniors prior to the first game of a twinbill against city-rival Southern Connecticut on Saturday, April 24.

The Blue and Gold then went out and played one of its most efficient games of the year and won the opener 4-3. With a chance at taking three of four on the weekend, the Chargers stayed close to the Owls the majority of the second game, only to give up five runs in the top of the ninth in their eventual 10-3 loss in the nightcap.

Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) (Wolcott, CT/The Gunnery) and Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) (Cromwell, CT/Cromwell) each contributed four hits in the doubleheader with Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) earning the win in relief in the Chargers game one victory.

Game 1 - New Haven 4, Southern Connecticut 3

After surrendering a run in the top of the first, the Chargers took the lead in its first at bat. Dylan Chiaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) (Southington, CT/Southington) delivered a clutch two-out, two-strike, two-RBI single to left field to give New Haven a 2-1 lead. Budzik and Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) scored on the play.

That lead grew to 3-1 when Bianco blasted a double that beat the Owls left fielder. Budzik, who went 4-7 with 2 runs and an RBI on the day, scored from first base and the Blue and Gold led 3-1 after three innings.

The Owls tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, the last of which came on a dropped third strike with a runner on third. Anthony Zambito struck out on a curveball in the dirt. UNH catcher Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) (Amityville, NY/Copiague) threw out Zambito at first but Tyshaun Diaz used his speed to score from third to even the game.

That didn't last long as the Blue and Gold took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Brett Reedy (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) (Enfield, CT/Enfield) walked to start the frame, then was sacrificed to second on a well-placed bunt by Jack Reardon (Commack. N.Y./Commack) (Commack, NY/Commack). Budzik then drove Reedy home with a sharp single to right field.

LaManna made sure that lead lasted, albeit working out of a pair of jams in the sixth and seventh innings. He struck out two Owls to end the sixth with a pair of runners on base. Then, in the top of the seventh, he induced a fly out with the tying and go-ahead runs on second and third base to earn the win.

Game 2 - Southern Connecticut 10, New Haven 3

The Chargers had a chance to steal this game, but stranded 11 baserunners, including one in every inning.

After taking a 1-0 lead on a Lester single that scored Taylor, who had doubled, the Blue and Gold surrendered four runs in the top of the fourth inning to fall behind 4-1.

The Chargers pulled within 4-3 by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lester, who had three hits and two RBIs in the two games, produced another run with an RBI groundout plating Chiaro, who had reached after getting hit by a pitch. Hunter Boag (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) then brought New Haven within 4-3 with an RBI single to center field scoring Taylor who had doubled for the second time in the game. Taylor went 4-for-5 with two runs scored on the day.

The Owls doubled their lead to 5-3 on a Izaiah Walker single that scored Andrew Eng in the sixth inning.

The Chargers best chance to get back even or take the lead came in the bottom of the eighth inning. They loaded the bases on a walk to Taylor, a Lester double and a Reedy walk, but pinch-hitter Aaron Soucy (Brooklyn, Conn./The Pomfret School) (Brooklyn, CT/The Pomfret School) struck out swinging.

Southern Connecticut then tacked on five insurance runs in the top of the ninth to produce the final score of 10-3.
