Baseball Plates Extra-Inning Run To Defeat AIC 3-2

West Haven, CT - Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) (Danville, VT/St. Johnsbury Academy) single in the top of the 1oth inning scored Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) (Cromwell, CT/Cromwell) from third base as the New Haven baseball team defeated AIC 3-2 in a key NE10 Southwest Division game at Frank Vieira Field.

Yes, you read that correctly. While the game was played at UNH, because the series was originally slated for Springfield back in early April, the Yellow Jackets were the home team.

The win improves UNH's record to 7-6 overall and 7-4 in NE10 play. AIC fell to 8-13 (7-6) with the loss.

New Haven 3, AIC 2 (10 innings)

Budzik started the all-important extra-inning rally with a one-out double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a throwing error by the Yellow Jackets left fielder. In stepped the sophomore Wells, who delivered a hit through the left side that scored Budzik.

Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) made that run hold up with a systematic bottom of the 10th frame. He induced a groundout before striking out the final two AIC batters to pick up the win in relief. LaManna threw three innings of scoreless baseball, facing the minimum nine batters despite allowing one hit. He was, of course, aided by one double play.

The Blue and Gold used five pitchers for the other seven innings. Each pitched effectively. Gary Costello (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) started the game and allowed one run in two innings before paving the way for a two-inning, no-run stint from Cam Guarino (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth).

Izaiah Mestre (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic), Bryan Pazulski (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), and Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, NY/Commack) all logged an inning each with only one run being put on the board by AIC.

UNH opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) (Wolcott, CT/The Gunnery) continued his torrid hitting. The NE1- Rookie of the Week selection drove in Budzik, who began the rally with a single, for a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers doubled that lead in the fourth inning. Budzik and Wells singled to put runners on the corners and Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) made it 2-0 on a sacrifice fly scoring Budzik from third.

AIC plated single runs in the third and sixth innings to tie the game. The last run came on a single to center field from Chad Lavelle.

In addition to scoring the go-ahead run, Budzik had a hit in all five of his plate appearances and scored all three runs. Taylor, who had the game-winning RBI, went 3-for-4 on the day. Wells was the other Charger to collect multiple hits with two. In addition to the sacrifice fly, Bianco collected the other Blue and Gold hit on the day.
