WEST HAVEN, Conn. –Senior right-side Jessica Akiona (Kapolei, Hawaii/La Pietra- Hawaii School for Girls) slammed a career-high 16 kills as the New Haven women's volleyball took a four-set victory over Bridgeport Tuesday night. The Blue and Gold have now won four games in a row and remain undefeated at home this season.
As a team, New Haven finished with a .231 hitting percentage and 57 kills overall, holding a slight edge to Bridgeport's .192 hitting totals and 54 hammers. Freshman outside Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led her team in both kills with 17, and digs with 15, leading a group of four Chargers that tallied a double-double in the match. Akiona finished just behind Brown in kills while also adding 13 digs, followed by junior outside Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) who contributed 14 hammers and 15 digs.
Northeast-10 Conference Rookie and Setter of the Week, freshman Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) dished out 48 assists, two ahead of the Purple Knights' Jaden Drollinger who assisted on 46 of her teammates kills. Leon-Tabor also added a career-best 12 digs on the night, while sophomore libero Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) finished with a game-high 23 digs to lead the Chargers' defensive efforts. As a team, the Blue and Gold collected 81 total digs while also posting a .947 reception mark, committing just four receiving errors all night.
