How it Happened
New Haven started the first half strong, by kicking off a 14-4 run in the first five minutes of action - sealed off by a three point bucket by Tavin Pierre-Philippe. The Blue and Gold's largest lead of the night, 16 points, was secured with 12:15 to go before halftime by Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) from outside the arc with the help of Kendall McMillan (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph). This forced Bentley to call a timeout.
Bentley got within nine points of the Chargers going into the break, 42-33. Leading New Haven at the half was Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie), with 12 points and 2 three-point baskets. As a team, New Haven shot 48.5 percent from the field - an improvement from their 40 percent last game against Saint Michael's.
At the half, Philippe was 2-of-2 from the stripe, maintaining his perfect free-throw shooting stat throughout the season.
The Falcons crept up after the break. Slowly but surely, as the game clock ran down, the closer Bentley got. With 4:08 left, Pete Blust grabbed an offensive board after teammate, Isaac Martin, missed a layup. Blust finished the job.
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech), who finished with 12 points, retaliated in the next possession with a three-point bucket, assisted by Lane. Laput answered, with a layup putting the Falcons back only one.
Laput and Olawoye went back and forth. Olawoye ran down court into the paint for a layup, Laput repeated.
Olawoye ended with 15 points, shooting perfectly from three-point range and the free-throw line. He had a season high of 11 prior to this game when the team traveled to Le Moyne in November.
Mason Webb helped Bentley push past their one point deficit with 43 seconds remaining. Up by two, Bentley called a timeout, 80-78.
After the timeout Rowland attempted two three-point shots, both misses, forcing Hotaling to talk things over. With one last chance, Rowland tried again but could not find the net. New Haven is now 1-2 since the start of 2022.
