How it Happened
The Blue and Gold push their record in the month of January to 2-2 after shutting down the Skyhawks 74-70. Although, things did not start off that way - after the tip at 3:30 p.m. Stonehill initiated a 8-0 run, leaving New Haven scoreless the first four minutes until Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y. /Elmont Memorial High School ) drove through the paint making a layup, and drawing a foul.
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) hit back-to-back three's, both assisted by Olawoye, helped bring New Haven to lock a 10-10 tie. Ultimately Philippe, New Haven's leader of the night, put the Chargers ahead by four, 14-10.
Going into the half, the Blue and Gold were up by one, 33-32. Their defense, led by Majak at the half (3 blocks, five rebounds), helped diminish Stonehill's shooting at the half. Of the Skyhawk's 34 attempted, only 13 found their way through the net (13-34). Both teams attempted 10 three-pointers each, New Haven connected on five while Stonehill only connected on three.
With 17:19 remaining in the second half, Rowland committed a turnaround jumper, outside the paint to finish New Haven's largest scoring run of the night, nine points. Rowland himself ended the night with 11 points and five assists.
Halfway through the half, Owen Chose made a layup on a fast break in the paint after Kendall McMillan (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) turned over the ball, this brought the score even at 53. However New Haven took the lead back and never lost sight. In this time, the closest Stonehill got within to the Chargers was two points, on two occasions - one being when Chase hit a three to bring the score to 72-70 still in favor of New Haven.
Antonio Lopez (Medford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was fouled by Emmanuel Bonsu with two seconds on the clock. He hit both shots at the free-throw line, he finished perfectly 4-for-4 from the stripe, and sealed New Haven's four point win, 74-70.
Inside the Box Score
- Tavin Pierre-Philippe set a new career-high in his debut in the starting five. The sophomore finished with a team high of 22 points, accompanied with three shots from outside the arc and seven from the field. Prior to tonight's game, Philippe was perfect throughout the season in terms of free-throw shooting, but tonight he went 5-for-7 from the stripe.
- Three members of the New Haven roster finished int he double-digits: Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) (18), Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) (11), and Philippe (22).
- New Haven shot 50 percent from three-point range, making 10-of-20 attempts.
- In the first half, New Haven's defense limited Stonehill's shooting and keeping them at 38.2 percent from the field (13-of-34).
- Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y. /Elmont Memorial High School ) set a new high, dishing out six assists. These assists helped Rowland finish multiple three's.
- New Haven was out rebounded by Stonehill 42-31.
