RINDGE, NH – In their second straight day of action the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team stayed on the road and took on the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University for another conference matchup. Off their loss against Bentley Friday night New Haven looked to bounce back and knock off the Ravens.
Series History
Since the two teams first meeting in 1989, New Haven has dominated the lifetime series between the programs leading the Ravens 27-2. Entering having won seven straight against the Ravens, the Chargers looked to keep the momentum going and with the 30 all time meeting between the two. Franklin Pierce's last win in the series came in 2015 but since then it has been all blue and gold in the series.
Back on the court for the second day in a row the Chargers first two points came off of kills by Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) but the blue and gold found themselves down early in the set. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) picked up kills throughout the set to keep things close, but a streak by the Ravens through the middle of the set separated things. The Chargers mounted their comeback late closing it to four after trailing by as many as seven led by kills from Reynolds-Martin and Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy). The Ravens however closed things out after their timeout to take the set 25-20 and go up 1-0 in the match. That loss would be the last for New Haven as after the late surge in the first turned the switch for New Haven in the match. Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) got right back to work in the second with a kill to put New Haven on the board, and Barry gave the Chargers a lead on her second kill of the set. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) gave New Haven their first two point lead with a kill and the Chargers never looked back from there. Brown went back to back with kills and errors by the Ravens and built the lead for the blue and gold up to as many as seven before it was New Haven taking the second set off an error by the Ravens, 25-18 and tying the match at 1-1. The third set New Haven had found their stride and jumped out to a 5-1 lead with two kills from Barry and one from both Reynolds-Martin and Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East). The third set was all New Haven building up to a nine point lead. Franklin Pierce put the pressure on late but Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) scored the last three points for New Haven off kills to close out the set winning it 25-22 and going up 2-1 in the match. As good as the third set was, the fourth was even better, scoring the first five points before allowing a point, before scoring six straight after a Ravens timeout to make it 11-1. Barry, Brown, Reynolds-Martin, Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) and Emma Lazerson (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) all combined for kills in the opening stretch to put New Haven up big. The hot start and big lead carried over to the end of the set when the blue and gold scored six of the final nine points with Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) finishing the set and match with a kill to win the set 25-15 and win the match 3-1. Brown, Barry and Reynolds-Martin all finished with double digit kills, with Brown leading the way with 17 and leading all scorers. Leon-Tabor added 39 assists and Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) led with 32 digs in the match.
