WEST HAVEN, Conn. – With their final home match of the regular season and the final week upon them, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team hosts the Assumption Greyhounds for the two teams second matchup of the year, and the first of three matches in the week for the blue and gold making their final push for their postseason seeding.
In the non conference meeting between the two teams in Worcester back in September, the Chargers swept the Greyhounds 3-0 improving their perfect all time record against Assumption to 15-0. In the match, Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) led the blue and gold with 12 kills followed by 10 kills from Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy). Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) added 31 assists and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) had 15 digs for the Chargers. New Haven sits sixth in the conference with three matches to go on the year with a key matchup against Saint Anselm on Friday, with the Hawks sitting fourth in the table, before a matchup against Saint Michaels on Saturday to close out the regular season for New Haven. Before the weekend however, the Chargers looked to stay perfect against the Greyhounds as they tipped off for the final time at Charger Gymnasium for the regular season.
In their final home match of the year the Chargers opened up the scoring going to their leading scorer Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) who picked up a tempo setting kill for the entire match. Itzel Cruz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) followed up that point with an ace to double up the score on the Greyhounds. Assumption scored twice to tie things up but Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) responded with an ace to take the lead again. After that point, New Haven never trailed again after that ace. The blue and gold put together a streak of six straight points opened up with a kill by Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School), with Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) adding a kill and a pair of kills by Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) to take control of the set. The Chargers would go up to lead by as many as 13 with a key streak of three to close out the set with Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) closing out the set with an exclamation point kill to take the set 25-12 and go up 1-0 in the match. The second set saw the Chargers take a quick three nothing lead in the set with a Carleigh Vedder (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead) service ace to open up the scoring. Just as they did in the first set, New Haven never trailed again. With streaks of four twice through the set led by kills and key aces the blue and gold charged to a dominant 22-14 lead in the set. Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) got it to set point and Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) finished the set with a kill to win the set 25-16 and go up in the match 2-0. In the third set, the Chargers saw themselves in a point they hadn't seen themselves in all match. New Haven trailed 3-0 early. Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) put the first point on the board. Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) gave the Chargers their first lead with a kill before Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) gave the blue and gold a three point lead in the set. The Greyhounds never gave up and kept things close trying to force a fourth set but Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) combined for back to back points to take a four point lead. New Haven closed out the set scoring the final three points with Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty), Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) all registering a kill with Barry's kill to seal the deal and win the set 25-19 and take the set 3-0. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led all scorers with 12 kills with Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) adding 9 kills and 8 kills from Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty).
