How it Happened
Two technicals and 35 fouls occurred Thursday evening when the Chargers took over the Penmen to seal the deal of a three-game sweep at home. Southern New Hampshire left 22 unanswered making two of the three events at home 20-plus point wins.
The Chargers had their largest lead of the first half with 10:05 remaining. They were ahead eight after Sean Smith Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart High School) banked a three, with the help of Kendall McMillan (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph). After Smith pushed New Haven up 18-10, the Chargers attempted nine three-pointers before the halftime buzzer sounded and missed all of them. They headed to the locker room behind two at the half.
The second half of the night is when things got rough. A technical foul was called on the visiting team after Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) put up a second-chance layup in the paint to put New Haven up by three. Thomas finished the night with his second double-double of the season, 12 points and 10 boards. Tavin Pierre-Philippe took the free throws making both.
Immediately after, the Blue and Gold extended their lead going on an 11-0 run featuring Philippe, Lane, and starting center Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Majak ended the run dunking the rock; he finished the night with his second double-double of the season as well.
Southern New Hampshire's Noah Kamba turned the ball over with under two minutes to go. With momentum flooding, Olawoye grabbed the ball, found Philippe downcourt who plunged it through the net. A technical was called on Philippe for embracing the rim a little too long, however after the Penmen missed the free throw they were awarded leaving the Blue and Gold still ahead by 17.
When the final buzzer sounded, New Haven held an extra 22 points and closed out their three-game homestead tying their longest win-streak of the season, 3-0.
