THE LEAD
After breaking even in their first weekend series to start the 2022 campaign, the New Haven baseball team will return to the Carolinas as they will play three games in Cary, N.C. The Chargers will open play with the Frostburg State Bobcats on Friday before taking on the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets (double-header) and Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

This will be the first time in program history that the Chargers will face off with the Frostburg State Bobcats!

The Chargers will also look to make history in this game, as well, having never played the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets before.
SERIES HISTORY VS SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS
In a series that dates back to the 90's, New Haven and Saint Thomas Aquinas will compete for the 31st time with the Blue and Gold holding a slight 16-14 record in the series. The first meeting between the two programs came on May 4, 1993 with New Haven taking a 3-1 win. In their most recent meetings, the Chargers have won two of their past three games over the Spartans with the latest being a dominant 8-2 win on March 7, 2020. SCOUTING THE CHARGERS:Â Â News | Roster | Schedule | Stats
After being shutout in their first two games of the season, the Charger's offense began to click. In their last two games, New Haven has outscored their opponents, 30-5, including a 17 run performance over the Chestnut Hill Griffins on Feb. 26.
Leading the Chargers on the young season, so far, has been junior first baseman Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), who currently leads the team in hits (5), RBIs (5), and steals (2) while hitting .333 over the weekend trip. Capping off his stellar start to the season was a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning against Chestnut Hill. Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) rebounded nicely from the opening series, going 4-8 in his last two games with three runs batted in, as well as three runs scored. The freshman outfielder also roped a RBI triple to right field in the bottom of the fifth against the Post Eagles. Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) has been a tough out for opponents, hitting 4-12 (.333), one of which was a triple, while also scoring twice and bringing a run in.  The junior INF/OF has also reached base six times via walk, fourth most amongst NE10 batters. Brett Reedy (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) is another Charger to enjoy a bounce-back second half to the weekend, hitting 4-8 with two RBIs and five runs scored.
Depsite picking up a loss in his first appearance on the season, Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) was still a force on the mound. The senior righty recorded a 1.29 ERA and a .86 WHIP across seven innings while punching out seven batters. Bryan Pazulski (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) also racked up seven strikeouts while tossing a 1.80 ERA through five innings. The junior only allowed three hits to 17 batters faced for a .176 opponent batting average despite not getting the win. Freshman south-paw Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) turned heads in Myrtle Beach, as well, throwing five shutout innings while only allowing three hits and a walk as he was credited with the win.
Head Coach Chris Celano has a chance to break a major milestone while in the Tar Heel State as he is two wins away from reaching 400 career wins. Celano has amassed a record of 213-149-2 as the skipper of the Chargers while racking up a 398-287-2 record in his collegiate coaching career.

After finishing 14-25 last year, Frostburg State has started the new season as hot as can be, racking up a 7-0 record to begin the 2022 campaign. Across that span, the Bobcats have outscored their opponents by a total of 60 runs, 87-27, including a dominant 22-5 victory over Bluefield State in their season-opener. Coming off a weekend series sweep in Wilson, N.C., Frostburg State will stay in N.C as they take on New Haven, Franklin Pierce and West Chester. The Bobcats enter the season with some firepower in their lineup, including redshirt sophomore AJ Campbell, who leads the team with three homeruns and 11 RBIs while batting .294. Another threat to go yard is senior first baseman Bryce Jackson who has gone 12-22 (.543) at the plate, including a pair of doubles and a pair of homeruns, in addition to six runs batted in. The Bobcats have had success on the bases as well as they have stolen 31 bases on 35 attempts with three players tied with four each. As a team, the Bobcats have hit .393 to start the year while going yard 10 times and driving in 80 runs. The team has also drawn 34 walks as opposed to 49 strikeouts.
On the mound, Jack Maruskin has been the team's workhorse so far, as he's recorded a 4.91 ERA and 1.36 WHIP while striking out 12. The junior righty allowed five hits through 7.1 innings pitched to hold opponents to a .185 batting average. Will Grove is the only starter to win both of his starts, despite racking up a 6.00 ERA. After a very successful 2021 season in which the Yellow Jackets went 32-10 and won the MEC Tournament, West Virginia State has started the new season 1-1 after splitting a double-header with Malone University. While in Cary, N.C., the Yellow Jackets will take on the NE10 as they play Franklin Pierce, New Haven (DH) and Saint Rose. Andrew Sharp and Nathan Paulson have both gone deep as the latter also leads the team in hits, going 4-6 (.667) to start the season. Sharp leads the team with three RBIs, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth in their second game. Andrew Stone is coming off a good game, having gone 2-2 while walking twice and driving one in. Stone also picked up the win in relief on the mound, allowing two hits and one run through two innings. Foster Conis has been great in the relief role, recording a 0.00 ERA and .33 WHIP though three innings while striking out four.

The Spartans are off the heels of a great season in which the team went 26-7, despite losing in the ECC Championship to Molloy. Saint Thomas Aquinas has started this season on a slower note after struggling in Myrtle Beach, the team picked up a win at Pace before traveling to Cary, N.C to take on the Chargers, Franklin Pierce Ravens and Saint Rose Golden Knights. Matthew Johnson leads the team with a .409 batting average while tying for first in RBIs, as well, with four. Also with four RBIs is Andrew Jemison, who has racked up a .304 average including a homerun while leading the team with two stolen bases. Danny Di Marzo has been another offensive threat for the Spartans, hitting .375 including a homerun and three RBIs.Yanni Orfanidis has appeared on the rubber most for the Spartans, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings to go with six strikeouts. John Archer leads the team with nine strikeouts through 4.1 innings while recording a 4.15 ERA. James Reilly and Mateo Reyes both picked up wins in the reliever role, neither allowing a run, while the former has pitched 4.2 innings.

UP NEXT
New Haven's home debut will have to wait after their date with Assumption was postponed. The Chargers will take on Mercy for a double-header on March 12-13 with the second game being played at Frank Viera Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM at Mercy Field in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. on Saturday, March 12.
