SCOUTING THE CHARGERS:Â
After picking up 3-2 win in the first game of doubleheader with Le Moyne on Sunday, the Chargers fell a consecutive three times, including a doubleheader sweep on Monday.
Despite heading into the weekend with only seven homeruns on the season, the Charger's bats had some pop. Although led by Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery), who had two in the first game of the four game series, Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) also went yard for his second of the year. Hitting the first of his collegiate career was outfielder Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy), who hit a two-run shot in the top of the fifth in the final game. Taylor also went a perfect 4-4 in the first game on Sunday while recording another hit in the second game, as well.
New Haven was last ranked at seventh, again, in the National College Baseball Writers Association East Region Poll with 30Â points.Â
Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) has played a vital role in the New Haven offense, so far this year. The freshman left fielder leads the team in RBIs (16), triples (3) and OBP (.505) while batting a team second-best .362 and drawing the second-most walks (21). Cain, who hit a two-run shot in game one on Monday, leads the team with a .364 (28-77) batting average, which also ranks 12th in the conference. Cain has driven in 15 runs on the season, second on the team. Also batting over .300 is center fielder Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery), who bats .361. Taylor is the current team leader in extra base hits (12), eight of which have been doubles.
Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) continues to dominate on the mound, tallying a 1.90 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. The senior allowed five hits and four walks through 6.0 innings, in his last outing, but also struck out nine batters. Bryan Pazulski (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), who owns a 2.89 ERA and 1.58 WHIP, gave a strong performance during his time on the mound. The junior, who is currently second on the team with 38 strikeouts, allowed five hits and five walks through 5.0 innings while punching out three. Freshman southpaw Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) held opponents to their lowest average (.208) out of all starters.
Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack), who picked up a win over the weekend, holds a 2.45 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP while recording 20 strikeouts and five saves, tied for first in the NE10. The junior closer has also held opponents to a team low of a .190 batting average.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS:
The Mavericks enter the series on a two-game losing streak after dropping both games of their doubleheader with #19 Molloy College. After picking up a 5-3 win over the Lions on Friday, the Mavs were outscored 6-16 on Saturday. Mercy currently holds a 12-17-1 record which includes two losses to New Haven on March 11, 4-5 & 1-2, respectively. Despite their record, the Mavericks are above .500 in conference play as they are 5-4 in the East Coast.
Nolan Giblin leads the Mavericks offense, so far this year, with four homeruns and 21 RBIs. The junior third baseman, who went 4-12 over the weekend with a homerun, also leads the team in batting average after hitting 40-104 (.385). Also with 40 hits on the season is Jaden Caballero, who has hit two homeruns and seven doubles while racking up 16 RBIs, third on the team. Caballero has been a speedy threat on the bases as he's tallied 14 steals on 19 attempts. Beside Giblin, Caballero trails only Robert Wootten, who has driven in 18 runs on the campaign while drawing 11 walks, as well. Justin Glennerster is the only other Maverick with 10+ RBIs as he also holds a .344 on-base percentage after drawing a team high 12 walks.
On the mound, Jonathan Diforio has been responsible for three of the Mavericks's three wins. The senior holds a 3.11 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP while racking up 29 strikeouts across 55.0 innings. Like Diforio, Anthony Burgio has also thrown two complete games on the season while the latter owns 4.94 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP while striking out a team high 49 batters. Out of all starters, Burgio has been the toughest to hit for opponents as he's held batters to a .239 average. Kuzari Jocelyn has been solid in the reliever role as he has thrown 14.1 innings, recording two wins and two saves.
