Wells Named NCBWA East Region Hitter of the Week

DALLAS, Texas – Junior outfielder Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) continued to rack up the accolades on Thursday when he was recognized as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Hitter of the Week. Wells joins Bridgeport's Andrew Francella who was named the East Region Pitcher of the Week.

The honor comes following a five-game stretch where Wells finished with 12 hits in 17 at bats for a .706 average, increasing that to .796 over the four-game weekend conference series against American International where he put up 10 of those hits in 13 at bats. In addition, Wells worked seven walks, including a pair of intentional passes, and stole three bases, all of which came against AIC.

Among his 12 total hits were three home runs and a triple, all of which came in a career-afternoon on Friday when he went 5-for-5 at the plate to open the series against the Yellow Jackets. The Danville, Vt. Native opened up the week with a pair of base knocks and a walk in a mid-week win over ECC powerhouse Molloy.

After opening the series with the Yellow Jackets in impressive fashion, Wells followed that up with a leadoff single to open up a doubleheader on Saturday, during which he finished with three total hits, while he was walked five times during that two-game stretch. He also scored three runs in the doubleheader and added one of his three stolen bases.

Wells wrapped up the week with two more hits, in four at bats, in the series finale on Sunday, while he also swiped a pair of bases in that contest.

For the season, Wells vaulted himself to third on the team at the plate with 33 hits in 117 at bats for a .282 average. His three home runs gives him five on the season which now leads the tea, while he also leads the way four triples. In addition, he has driven in 17 runs and now has a team-high 32 walks and is second on the team with 11 stolen bases.

Wells and the Chargers will return to action over the weekend as they welcome Saint Rose for the final regular season conference series. The four-game set against the Golden Knights is scheduled for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday with first pitch on both days slated for 12:00 p.m. The Chargers will also honor their senior class ahead of Saturday's twinbill.
