WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven Women's Track team had a short drive this week going to Southern Connecticut State University to compete at the Wilton Wright Invitational. Battling the elements and a half hour rain delay, the team finished on the podium three times and won both the Javelin and Long Jump.
Records are meant to be broken and Neva Bostic's (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) record in the Javelin continues to be broken as Bostic set a new personal and school record at the meet. Opening up with a throw of 32.69 meters Bostic sat in sixth, but her path was only up, throwing 36.35 meters on her second throw moving her into third. In the finals and through the rain she would throw her winning mark of 39.51 meters winning the meet along with breaking her own record that she has already broken multiple times on the season.
Three jumps was all Kristen Washington (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) needed in the long jump to walk away with another win for herself. After fouling her first jump, her second jump of 5.20 meters moved her into third place before following that up with her winning jump of 5.64 meters on her third jump that moved her into first place. Jumping in the rain she would jump 5.38 meters on her fifth jump, but her third was all she needed to take home first place in the meet.
Jalynn McCown (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) beat out the rain and the competition in the weight throw finishing second overall. McCown, sitting in fifth through the prelims moved into the finals with her second throw of 39.94 meters before she turned it up. On her opening throw of the finals she got her mark at 43.75 meters moving her into second place but that was not enough for her. On her final throw she surpassed her previous mark and threw 43.96 meters locking up second place for the blue and gold.
The team now prepares for their first week off since the start of the season before returning to the track after Easter to compete at the Jay Carisella Coaches Invitational meet in Boston Massachusetts all in final preparation ahead of the Conference Championships in May.
