ALBANY, New York. – After 12 matches competing in tournaments from Florida to Delaware, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team opens up their Northeast-10 Conference schedule with a matchup against the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose. Picked to finish second in the preseason poll the hunt for a conference crown begins Tuesday in New York.
Series History
In the 16 match history of these two teams, New Haven has dominated the series going 15-1, and are currently on a five match win streak with their only loss being in 2015. In their matchup last season, the Chargers swept the Golden Knights in straight sets at Charger Gymnasium. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led all scorers with 12 kills along with 3 aces and 3 blocks. In the 2019 season the Chargers traveled to New York and left with a 3-1 win.
After traveling most of the afternoon, it was finally time for their conference opener and the road to the conference crown to begin for the blue and gold. Saint Rose jumped out early to take the lead but the Chargers stayed close with clutch kills coming from Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) and Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) to keep it close. After a slow start it was the Chargers that got hot late in the first set scoring eight of the last ten points to close out the set and take the win 25-22. The second second was close at the beginning before it was the Golden Knights pulling away late to even the match up at one set a piece heading into the third. Being tied at one set a piece the third set opened up just like the match with the two teams splitting the first two points. That's when New Haven jumped putting up five straight with two kills from Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) and one from Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) to take the lead early for the Chargers. That early lead was just what New Haven needed as they never trailed in the set and commanded the score all set with Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) finishing the set off with a kill to take the 25-20 win and go up 2-1 in the match. In the pivotal fourth set the Chargers took the early 2-0 lead and would later put together another five point streak to take a lead that would hold again for the match. The Golden Knights put the pressure on late but with a kill from Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) to set up match point Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) slammed the door with a service ace to take the set 25-20 and the match 3-1. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led the Chargers with 13 kills and Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) finished with 12 as Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) added 43 assists to her total on the season.
