WEST HAVEN, Connecticut. – After a thrilling win on Tuesday night against NE10 foe AIC the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team returned to Charger Gymnasium for a non-conference matchup against the Wildcats of Wilmington University. The Chargers also looked to remain perfect all time against the Wildcats after a 3-2 win for the Chargers came last season in Delaware.
Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) entered the match with 984 kills in her career looking to become the 18 Charger to join the 1000 kill club and the blue and gold looked to get Brown the ball so she could complete the milestone. In the first set it was the Wildcats that jumped out to an early lead but the Chargers came storming back going on a five, one run to tie the match back up. Runs by the blue and gold kept the Chargers with a lead but a late charge by the Wildcats tied the set up at 17-17 forcing New Haven to call a timeout. After the timeout, New Haven came out strong closing the match out on an 8-3 run with Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) finishing the set off with a kill to win 25-20 and go up 1-0 in the match. In the second set Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and Kylie Reynolds-Martin (/) connected on a slide to put the blue and gold up early. The blue and gold gave up only one lead to the Wildcats in the set which came as a one point lead, but New Haven stormed back going on a three-one run to retake the lead and never looked back after that. After some back and forth scoring between the two teams a five-one scoring run for New Haven with a kill from Brown and Reynolds-Martin closed out the second set 25-19 and setting New Haven up 2-0 in the match. Six kills shy in of the 1000 career mark, Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and the entire Chargers squad looked to get the ball to Brown so she could reach the mark on her home floor. The third set started with New Haven getting on the board fist off a Wildcat mistake as it quickly became all New Haven and the push to find Brown. As the set continued on Brown continued to pick up kills but the Wildcat defense did not make it easy for her sending blockers to the net and leaving it all on the floor. Brown picked up her 998 kill making it 18-11 but the Wildcats through attack errors and sending multiple blockers to Brown to stop her found themselves down 24-12. Henwood who had been serving sent her serve long to give Brown a shot at one more kill but a service error by Wilmington sealed the deal for the blue and gold who took the set 25-13 and the match 3-0. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) finished with 14 kills, two shy of making it to the mark she needed for 1000 kills. Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) added 10 kills as Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) totaled 37 assists.
As the Chargers complete the home stand perfect they take to the road and look to stay perfect in conference play when they take on the Setters of Pace University as Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) now looks to climb up the leader board of the 1000 career kill club in the match. The Setters and Chargers tip off in Pleasantville on Tuesday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. All updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
