PLEASANTVILLE, New York. – Following a strong win at home that saw the University of New Haven women's volleyball team sweep the Wildcats of Wilmington, the Chargers returned to the road and to conference play looking to remain perfect in NE10 play. In addition to staying perfect, Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) looked to notch her 1000 kill of her career after getting within two during the match against the Wildcats.
The blue and gold entered Goldstein Fitness center and immediately set the tone as Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) put New Haven on the board with a kill to get things rolling. The Chargers rallied three straight after Henwoods kill including a Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) kill to make it 4-0. After a trio of Setter points, Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) picked up her 999, kill and her first kill of the match to get the attack going again. After both teams traded points New Haven held the lead and up 11-8, Henwood found Brown on the outside who finished Henwoods set picking up her 1000 kill of her career and put the Chargers up by four. The first set would see New Haven hold a lead for the entirety weathering the Setters late run before Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) closed out the first set with a kill winning it 25-22. The second set saw Pace take the first two points and their first lead of the match, but that did not last long as the blue and gold tied that set and then took the lead with a five point scoring surge, with kills from Brown and Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) along with a pair of aces by Brown. New Haven never looked back after taking the lead and continued to roll, scoring in bunches and keeping Pace from finding a rhythm. A service error by Pace saw New Haven take the second set 25-17 and up 2-0 in the match. The third set would be New Haven's toughest of the match as they looked to make it back to back sweeps for the third time this season. Pace came out strong looking to steal a match from the blue and gold and made New Haven do something they hadn't all night, play from behind. The Setters were able to hold a slim lead over New Haven even after a five point run by New Haven to take a one point lead. Late in the set it was Pace who was up 23-21 but Brown picked up a kill and Johnson and Mast combined for a block to tie the set at 23. Pace took the next point and at set point, the blue and gold stayed composed and scored the next three points via; service error, Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) kills, and an ace by Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) to win the set 26-24 and win the match 3-0. The Chargers had three attackers with double digit kills, Brown who led with 15, Juergens added 12 and Kylie Reynolds-Martin (/) had 11. Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) had 37 assists in the match as Juergens and Brown each had 15 digs. Brown, who needed only two kills to reach 1000 kills, became just the 18 Charger to reach that milestone, looking now to climb up the standings in the elite club for the blue and gold.
