WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Coming off their big win against the Setters of Pace University, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team returned home to open up a three straight non-conference matches in a row starting with a matchup against the Lions of Molloy University, the opening match over three in a row for the blue and gold.
The opening set of the match was a back and forth battle between the two squads as the Lions held a slim lead over the Chargers throughout the opening set. New Haven closed the gap late but it was the Lions that took the first set 25-21. In the second set, New Haven rebounded in the second set with a hot start opening up the set with a 6-3 run. That hot start carried New Haven who carried the early momentum through the match forcing early timeouts by the Lions and keeping them on their heels as the attack continued to be spread between Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy), Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac). As the offense continued to find its way to Juergens, it was her that closed out the set and evened the match at one set a piece with the 25-23 win in the second. Carrying the momentum to the third, it was the Chargers that jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Scoring the opening two points via the kill from Mast and Juergens the blue and gold leading by as many as 16 at one point going on a winning the set 25-12 and taking the lead in the match 2-1. In the fourth set the blue and gold looked to end the match and extend their win streak to eight as the Lions attempted to extend the play and force a fifth. The Lions scored the first points of the set and led by four early, but a charge into New Havens lineup quickly saw them surge into the lead and never look back. All tied up at 11 the blue and gold went on a 14-6 run with Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) registering three kills on the run to take the set 25-16 and winning the match 3-1. Juergens led New Haven with 13 kills as Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) added 11 kills. Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) added 38 assists as Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) had 22 digs in the match.
With the win streak up to eight now, New Haven heads to the road to complete their three match streak of non-conference matches when they travel to Millersville Pennsylvania to take on Millersville on Friday October 20 with first tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m. All updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
