MILLERSVILLE, Penn. – Coming off their non-conference win against the Lions of Molloy on their home court, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team began their two day trip in Pennsylvania with an opening match Friday night against the Marauders of Millersville University. With just their eighth ever meeting between the two squads, New Haven looked to make it three in a row since their last meeting in 2008.
After a slow start that saw New Haven lose their first match to Molloy on Thursday night, the blue and gold did anything but start out slow, as Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) put the Chargers on the board with a kill and followed that uo with an ace to take the early lead. Early on the points came in pairs for New Haven but a 5-0 Chargers run saw them go from trailing by two, to being up by two. The energy would carry the team through the set and Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) set up set point with her kill and the team forced an error on Millersville to take the opening set 25-22. In the second set the Chargers had to battle from behind testing the squad as they trailed by as many as three, at one point but with one surge following a service error, Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) went back to back with kills tying the match and boosting the blue and gold to make a late run in the set. New Haven closed out the set on a 5-0 run which was capped off by a kill from Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) to seal the set winning 25-22 and going up 2-0 in a tough match on the road. With the momentum swinging in their direction, New Haven struck quick in the third set as Juergens found her stride picking up big kills and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) continued to keep the Marauders at bay. Up by three and with a chance to win in straight sets New Haven dominated going on a 6-1 run closing out the third set winning 25-18 and taking the match in straight sets 3-0. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) stayed red hot leading New Haven with 17 kills on 31 attempts to hit .516 on the evening while also posting 10 digs in the match. Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) added 26 assists with Rilee Jesses registering 12 digs in the match.
With the road stand continuing for the blue and gold, the Chargers remain in Pennsylvania with a match against the Golden Bears of Kutztown University for a Saturday afternoon matchup. The Chargers and Golden Bears tip off from Keystone Arena on Saturday October 21 at 2:00 p.m. All updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
