KUTZTOWN, Penn. – After back to back nights of non-conference matchup, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team made it three matches in a row as they took on the Golden Bears of Kutztown University before they returned home to the nutmeg state. Already 1-0 in Pennsylvania, after a Friday night win against Millersville the Chargers looked to extend their win streak to 10 and build momentum ahead of their return to conference play.
Carrying the momentum over from Friday night Michellle Henwood opened the set up with an ace. Following an attack error by the Golden Bears, New Haven was up early and just where they wanted to be. The blue and gold would never give up the lead and when Kutztown would tie the set up New Haven responded with a rally of points to recapture the momentum and keep things moving. Strong finishes were the boost for New Haven against the Marauders and they used that again in the first set closing the first set out on a 4-0 run as Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) had a pair of kills and Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) scored the final point winning 25-19. The second set saw the Golden Bears rebound and evened the match at one set a piece as a late run gave them the late lead and win. In the third set with both teams settling into the match, it was the Golden Bears that got the lead early forcing New Haven to play from behind. The Golden Bears were the first to 24, however New Haven did not let the Golden Bears have the set as they went on to score six unanswered with Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) picking up two kills as New Haven responded with a 26-24 win and up 2-1 in the match. In the fourth, Golden Bears once again responded to New Haven taking the lead and took the fourth set 25-21 and forcing pivotal fifth set. With the match and win streak on the line, the blue and gold left it all out on the court in the final set. The Chargers scored the first two points of the set and never looked back. A pair of service aces swung the momentum and Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) closed out the set and match with a kill as New Haven won the fifth set 15-3 and won the match 3-2. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led New Haven with 19 kills and 15 digs posting a double-double as Michellle Henwood dished out 42 assist in the match.
With three strong wins and the streak to double digits, New Haven returns to Charger Gymnasium and to conference play ahead of their biggest match of the season when the host the Falcons of Bentley University. The top two teams in the conference and both undefeated only one can remain as New Haven looks to stay in the top seed heading into the postseason. The Chargers and Falcons take to the court on Friday October 27 at Charger Gymnasium with first tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m. All updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
