Mast and Chargers Master Falcons with 3-1 Win

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – As the two undefeated teams in the conference entered play only one could remain as the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team welcomed the Falcons of Bentley University to Charger Gymnasium in a Friday night battle of titans. With both teams boasting perfect records in the conference and riding double-digit win streaks, only one team would be able to walk away with both and sole possession of first place in the NE10 Conference. 

 

In a classic battle between two of the top teams the opening set was a battle back and forth as both teams traded early kills as Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) got New Haven on the board continuing her success against the Falcons. In their first meeting earlier in the year Mast finished second for New Haven in kills and started where she left off. The Falcons led early, but it was the Chargers that took their first lead off a 3-0 run. The Falcons rallied to tie it back up, but New Haven continued to hold a slim lead growing a lead to as many as five late in the opening set. With a slim lead late, New Haven tried to close out the opening set getting to 24 first but Bentley rallied late to tie and take the opening set 26-24 and take the lead early. In the second set, Mast opened up the set serving and fueled New Haven's energy for the rest of the set and match as New Haven opened up on an 8-0 run in the set. With a commanding lead, the blue and gold never stepped off the gas as Bentley only got to double digit points after New Haven reached 20 points in the set. Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) finished the second set with a kill as the blue and gold evened the match at one winning 25-13. In the third second with the match tied at one all, New Haven took the first point but Bentley took the early lead in the third set forcing New Haven to build the momentum as the set went on. Trailing late in the set the Chargers behind Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and Mast rallied finishing the set on a 5-0 run led by a pair of kills from Brown and kill from Mast, the blue and gold took back to back sets and went up in the match 2-1 riding momentum heading into the fourth set. In the clash of titans New Haven had the opportunity to take a commanding win and take the match in the set took the first set in the fourth set. Going back and forth early, the Chargers thanks to a 3-0 run with Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) and Kylie Reynolds-Martin (/) each picking up big kills to give New Haven the lead in the set. The blue and gold followed that streak up with a 6-0 run that saw Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) pick up a pair of kills and give New Haven a commanding six point lead. Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) combined for four of New Haven's final five points in a commanding 25-16 win in the fourth and win the match 3-1. Four Chargers posted double-doubles with kills and digs as Brown posted a 19-17 nights, Mast posted 11-14, Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) posted 10-15 and Henwood posted 43 assists with 10 digs in the win.

 

Snapping Bentleys 14 match win streak and perfect record in the conference, the Chargers took sole possession of first place in the conference while extending their win streak to 11 and improving to 6-0 in NE10 matches. Riding the high of the win, New Haven has a quick turn around as they return to the hardwood on Saturday night when they host the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University. Tip-off from Charger Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m on the Charger Sports Network and NE10 Now as the blue and gold look to remain perfect and keep the streak alive.
