Myrtle Beach, S.C. – After two tough drops in their season debut, the Chargers took the field looking for redemption in a single game against Chestnut Hill. Finding their offensive groove early the Chargers took home their first win of the season with an 8-5 victory over the Griffins.
New Haven found the lead in the first inning after graduate Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) homered to center field on a 2-0 count, sending Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) home to give the Chargers the three-run lead. New Haven added two more later in the first inning, when a line drive double from junior Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) brought in two more runs.
The Chargers would cap off their scoring with a run in the bottom of the second, and two more in the bottom of the fifth. Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) with an RBI double on a fly ball to right and an RBI single from freshman Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) were among the highlights for the last scoring plays.
Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) led the Chargers to victory on the mound. Eletto allowed four hits and three runs over five innings, striking out five. Michael Gatti (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) and Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) entered out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
For the game, New Haven totaled thirteen hits. Leading the way was Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) who was clutch at the plate with runners on base, driving in four on three hits. Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) and senior Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) both with a pair of hits to push the Chargers to victory.
