New Haven Completes Series Sweep Over Bridgeport

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Starting off hot with a first game shutout against the Bridgeport Purple Knights, the Chargers looked to continue that momentum going into a double-header on Saturday and Sunday matinee. Strong pitching and hot bats led the Chargers to complete the sweep on the four-game series.

Saturday, March 4th:

Game 1- New Haven 10, Bridgeport 4

The Chargers grabbed an early lead on its way to victory with a =n RBI single from freshman Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven), Pincince scoring later on a error, and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) in the second inning.

The lead would continue when Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) would hit a sacrifice fly shortly before Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) would send one over the fence of right field. The offensive momentum continued into the top of the fourth, but Bridgeport would answer with one of their own. Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) would single on a 2-2 count, scoring one more.

The Chargers would start to pull away by tallying three runs in the sixth inning, thanks to homeruns by Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery).

Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) would earn the win on the mound for New Haven. The southpaw allowed seven hits and four runs over five innings, striking out four and walking one. Kevin McNiff (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Mason Glickman (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) would enter out of the bullpen to help close the game out in relief.

New Haven would tally 13 hits on the day, led by freshman Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) with three hits in three at bats. Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) would all collect multiple hits for the Chargers leading them to victory in game one.

Game 2- New Haven 6, Bridgeport 1

Continuing the momentum from the first game, the Chargers got things moving in the second inning when Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) would single on a 3-1 count scoring one run. Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) would then double on a fly ball to left field scoring two.

New Haven would not advance the score until the top of the sixth inning on a homerun to right field from Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) advancing their lead to five. Capping off the day in the top of the 7th when Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) stole third and scored shortly after on a wild pitch.

The Chargers saw the ball well in the second game, racking up seven hits in the game. Graduates Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) and Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) would both collect two hits to lead New Haven and continue the winning streak.

Graduate Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) was credited with the victory for the Chargers, surrendering zero runs and two hits over four innings, striking out three and walking zero. Michael Gatti (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) and Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) would enter the game to close out in relief.

Sunday, March 5th:

New Haven 9, Bridgeport 4

The Chargers would end the four-game series with an early morning victory, completing the sweep. The Bridgeport Purple Knights would get things moving in the first inning, but that offensive effort was matched on a line drive to right field by senior Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy)

Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) would find himself a double in the bottom of the third scoring two runs to cut Bridgeport's lead to one. The Chargers would tie things up at four when Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) grounded into a double play, but still managed to knock in one run.

The game would stay tied until the bottom of the seventh when the Chargers would start to pull away. A line drive single from Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) would put give New Haven a base runner to begin the inning, he would later be knocked in for the lead on a line drive single from Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague). Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) would find himself another RBI single, followed by Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) with a walk to bring in one more run.
