Baseball Splits Second Day Doubleheader Against Southern

West Haven, C.T- After the comeback effort fell short in Friday's first game of the series, the Chargers looked to redeem themselves against the Owls this afternoon. The blue and gold split the doubleheader with a loss in the first game and bouncing back to a 7-1 win in the second game of the afternoon.

Southern took the opener by pounding out 11 hits in their eventual 7-2 win, The blue and gold struck early in game two and won the nightcap by a 7-1 score.

Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) each contributed multiple hits between the two games. Taylor added four RBIS from his spot in the order. On the mound Tyler Sausville (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) earned another win to add to his stats with a solid game two start.

Game 1: Southern 7, New Haven 2 

Graduate Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) took the mound to start the first game of the slate. Eletto made quick work of the first batter forcing a fly out to right field. Following the fly to right field, Eletto forced two more outs one to second baseman Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) and one to short Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham), to retire the side.

The Owls took a two-run lead off a homerun ball in the second inning and added on to their lead with a second home run to left field, making it a four run lead. Southern would take a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth, before the Chargers would find their first run.

New Haven would find themselves a run in the bottom of the sixth when Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) would double to center field, scoring one. Following Wells was Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) with a single to left field, scoring another, wrapping up the offensive effort for the Chargers.  

The Chargers totaled seven hits in game one. Matt McIntire (Williamston, N.J./Williamstown) and Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) all managed multiple hits for New Haven, both getting two hits to lead the team at the plate. 

Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) threw four innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out two and walking one. Bryan Pazulski (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Game 2: Southern 1, New Haven 7

Looking for a win, the Chargers looked to freshman Tyler Sausville (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) on the mound to start off the second game. After letting up a leadoff double the Owls would find one run off a sacrifice fly, but Sausville would force a fly out to limit the damage.

The Chargers took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning, starting off with a leadoff single from Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park). Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) would find himself a double on a line drive to right field to bring in two, and Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) would bring in another run on a sacrifice fly.

The blue and gold continued their momentum, finding themselves 4 more runs throughout the game. Finding one run in the in the bottom of the second on a single from Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and finding their last 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth. Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) scoring on a wild pitch, before Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) was driven in by a single from Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell). Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) would find another hit on the afternoon to bring in the seventh and final run of the game.

Tyler Sausville (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) was the winning pitcher for the Chargers, allowing four hits and one run over six innings, striking out two and walking one. Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

The Chargers grabbed themselves nine hits in the game. Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) and Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) all collected multiple hits for New Haven. Bianco went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead New Haven at the plate in game two.

The Chargers will take on their Elm City rival for one last time tomorrow afternoon for a single game. Looking to split the total series with the Owls, the first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. and all the action will be available on Chargers network on NE10 NOW.
