Baseball Season Comes to an End Against Saint Rose

Albany, N.Y- After two tough losses on the Chargers senior day, the blue and gold packed up and headed to Albany for a single game makeup from last week against the Golden Knights of Saint Rose. After the Le Moyne series, the Chargers playoff hopes had fallen, making this game the last of their 2023 season.

Saint Rose 16, New Haven 5

Starting up at the plate the Chargers everyday first baseman Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) would lead off for the Chargers for the 43rd time this season. Bianco would take one ball and would be hit by a pitch on the second, putting the first runner on the basepath. Two pitches into the second batter Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) would grab his 27th stolen base of the season, followed by his 28th on the next batter. New Haven would grab their first run of the game on a ground out from Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven), before the side was retired.

To end off the season the Chargers fielded a lot of players you would not see on a normal starting lineup for the blue and gold. However, New Haven looked to a repeat starter freshman Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) to get the game started. After forcing a flyout for the first batter, Saint Rose would even the score, taking the lead by two before Ramnarace would find a strikeout to end the first.

Aside from one run coming in for the Golden Knights in the bottom of the second, Ramnarace would keep the lead to a minimum, gathering three strikeouts. Matthew Minio (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) would come in for a struggling Ramnarace as Saint Rose would shortly start to slip away grabbing five back-to-back runs before a pop out would end the fourth.

New Haven would find their second run in the fourth but could not get the offensive going enough to minimize the lead before grabbing their third in the top of the fifth. A single from Zack Pincince (Woonsocket, R.I./North Haven (Conn.)) would lead off the fifth, and Nicholas Campagnuolo (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) would come in to pinch run for the center fielder. Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) coming up to the plate would have a runner on second after Campagnuolo would advance to second on a wild pitch, shortly being hit in by Cerruto to grab the Chargers third run.

The Chargers would grab their last few runs off a pop fly from Matthew McIntire in the sixth and a line drive from McIntire in the eighth.

The game came with a lot of interesting highlights, such as numerous position switches and pinch hitters. Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) the Chargers everyday center fielder coming in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh, Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) the Chargers highlighted rookie of the year, would come in for his first time on the mound for the season. Another one of New Haven's prominent pitchers Izaiya Mestre (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) coming in to play left field.

At the plate, freshman ace Tyler Sausville (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) would come in to pinch hit, as well as retired designated hitter Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley), coming out of his two-year hitting retirement to end his career off as a Charger.

Many Chargers managed to grab a hit off the Saint Rose pitchers, but the team of freshman starting off the game managed to lead the way for the Chargers collecting five of the seven New Haven hits.

With that game the 2023 New Haven Baseball season will come to a close, going 28-15 on the year and 10-10 in NE10 Conference play. That put the Chargers at a .651 winning percentage overall and .500 in conference play. The Chargers will say goodbye to eleven members of the team but will welcome back numerous underclassmen who made a mark on this year's season.
