Chargers Fly Past Hawks: Sweep 4th Straight Match

WEST HAVEN Conn – With the brooms out, the University of New Haven looked to keep the good times rolling as they welcomed the Hawks of Saint Anselm College for their second straight home math as New Haven looked to make it four straight sweeps. A year ago New Haven swept the Hawks in straight sets and looked to repeat the result this year on their home court.

After dominant win against the Penmen the Chargers carried the momentum and wasted little time jumping out to an early lead as Juli De Acharan (Sevilla, Spain/IES Nestor Almendros) served on a 6-0 New Haven run where Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) had a pair of kills and Katherine Rank (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) and Lauren MacKellar (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Northville) each had kills as it was all blue and gold opening up the first set up 10-1. The strong start carried New Haven who never looked back and continued to find their spots on the court as Rank led the attack with five kills ahead of Kamke and MacKellar who each had four kills in the opening set win, 25-11. It was Kamke with her fourth kill to win the opening set that carried the Chargers momentum into the second. Saint Anselm settled in slightly in the second set after New Haven was in complete control in the first, but that feeling lasted only for a short time, as New Haven who went from being tied 7-7 to being up 12-7 as MacKellar and Williams each had kills on the run. That run jump started New Haven who continued to roll and capitalized on an attack error to win the second set 25-14 and go up 2-0 in the match. Looking back to Saturday's match against the Penmen New Haven in the second set went on a 12-0 run to open up the set, New Haven matched that stat, as Payton Malinoski (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) served to open up the third set as Kamke had three kills in the run as New Haven went up quickly 12-0. That momentum carried as New Haven quickly flew past the Hawks and De Acharan aced the set to win the third set 25-12 and win the match 3-0 as the Chargers made it four straight sweeps. Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) led the attack with 13 kills as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) had 18 assists. Payton Malinoski (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) defensively had nine digs in the win.

With four straight sweeps and four straight wins, New Haven will look to make it five and carry the momentum on the road as they travel north for a Friday night match up. New Haven will travel to take on the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University on Friday, October 18 with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 PM from the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse. All updates, schedules, and post-match recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
