ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – After sweeping their matches of the weekend, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team returned to the court on the road as they traveled to New York to take on the Lions of Molloy in another non-conference match up as New Haven looked to improve to two matches above .500.
The Chargers jumped out to a hot start in the opening set as Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) continued her strong sophomore season for New Haven as Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) carried her momentum from the home stand picking up big kills when New Haven needed them. The Chargers closed out the first set on a 5-0 run as Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) had a pair of kills in the run to win 25-13 and take the lead in the match 1-0. In the second set, an early run by Molloy carried the Lions as Kamke and the Chargers made a late run, but it was Molloy who took the second set 25-20 and tied the match at 1-1. After dropping the second set New Haven responded with a run mid-way through the third set where they took the lead and never looked back and once again closed out the set strong scoring six of the final seven led by Kamke again with a pair of kills and New Haven won 25-16 and went back up 2-1 in the match. Molloy however didn't go away as they battled back. In the fourth New Haven surged late looking to win the match as Kamke again led the attack and got within one point, 24-23 but Molloy picked up the final point of the set to even the match 2-2. In the pivotal fifth, Molloy used the home court and pulled away late, scoring the final three to take the fifth set 15-11 and win the match 3-2. Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) led the attack with 23 kills and 18 digs for her double-double as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) had 28 assists in the loss.
The Chargers return to the road when they travel to Willmington, Delaware on Thursday, October 3, and will tip off from the Willmington University Athletic Complex against the Wildcats at 7:00 PM. All updates, schedules, and post-match recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
